Product Engineer Designer information

What does a product engineer designer do?

A Product Engineer Designer is responsible for combining engineering principles with creative design to develop new products or improve existing ones. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to create products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, ensuring that designs meet technical specifications, user needs, and production requirements. Their work often involves prototyping, testing, and refining ideas before moving to mass production. Product Engineer Designers also use CAD software and other tools to develop detailed models and drawings, playing a crucial role in bringing concepts to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product engineer designer?

To thrive as a Product Engineer Designer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, product design, and materials science, often backed by a relevant degree such as mechanical or industrial engineering. Proficiency in CAD software (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), rapid prototyping tools, and knowledge of manufacturing processes are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These capabilities are crucial for developing functional, market-ready products that meet user needs and business goals.

How do product engineer designers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development cycle?

Product Engineer Designers frequently work alongside product managers, engineers, and marketing teams to ensure design feasibility and alignment with business objectives. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, prototype reviews, and feedback loops, translating user needs into technical and visual solutions. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as priorities may shift based on project requirements or user feedback. This collaborative environment helps ensure that the final product is both user-friendly and technically viable.

What is the difference between Product Engineer Designer vs Product Manager?

AspectProduct Engineer DesignerProduct Manager
Primary FocusDesigning and engineering product features, ensuring usability and technical feasibilityOverseeing product development, strategy, and market fit
Required SkillsDesign tools, engineering principles, user experienceMarket analysis, project management, communication
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with engineering and design teamsCoordinates across marketing, engineering, and design teams

Product Engineer Designers focus on creating and engineering product features with a blend of design and technical skills, while Product Managers oversee the overall product strategy and lifecycle. Both roles collaborate closely but serve different functions within product development teams.

Are product engineer designers still in demand?

Product engineer designers are still in demand as companies focus on developing innovative products and improving user experience. Skills in CAD software, prototyping, and cross-disciplinary collaboration are valuable in this role, which often requires a strong understanding of engineering principles and design tools.

Do product engineer designers make good money?

Product engineer designers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. They often have skills in engineering, design, and software tools, which can lead to higher compensation as they gain expertise. Overall, the role can be financially rewarding compared to many other engineering or design positions.

Job description

Engineering at TRACTIAN

The Engineering team at TRACTIAN is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge infrastructure, technologies, and products to harness the power of IoT data. Our team of talented engineers collaborates to build robust systems, innovative solutions, and scalable platforms that drive TRACTIAN's success. We are instrumental in shaping the company's decision-making process, optimizing operational efficiency, and delivering exceptional experiences to our customers.

What will you do

As a Product Engineer, you will play a key role within the Software Team, working closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to shape, build, and ship features that solve real customer problems. You will help translate product requirements into scalable, well-architected solutions, moving fluidly between technical implementation and product thinking. This role involves engaging with multiple moving parts and offers the opportunity to contribute across the full product lifecycle, from discovery to deployment. You will help streamline processes, enhance team efficiency, and directly contribute to the company's overall success.

Responsibilities
  • Build Product Features: Design, develop, and ship features end-to-end, from initial concept through to production.
  • Partner with Product & Design: Work closely with product managers and designers to translate ideas and customer needs into technical solutions.
  • Own Technical Decisions: Make pragmatic architecture and implementation choices that balance speed, quality, and scalability.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with software, product, engineering, and other departments for seamless execution.
  • Iterate Based on Feedback: Use data, user feedback, and experimentation to refine and improve features post-launch.
  • Support Deployments: Help ensure smooth, efficient deployments and system performance.
Requirements
  • 5+ years in full-stack development, with strong experience in frontend frameworks (React, TypeScript) and backend systems (APIs, microservices, gRPC, REST), databases (Postgres, MongoDB, Redis), and cloud infrastructure (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, AWS, or similar).
  • Proficient in TypeScript and Golang (or similar languages), with solid testing experience (unit, end-to-end, and load testing using Cypress, Playwright, k6).
  • Comfortable with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines and system monitoring (Datadog, Grafana).
  • Strong product sense, with the ability to translate ambiguous requirements into shipped features and iterate based on user feedback and data.
  • Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into product features (e.g., RAG, GPT-based solutions, API integration with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with excellent communication to foster cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder alignment.
  • Strong track record of owning features through the full development lifecycle, using issue tracking tools (Linear), and delivering on time.
  • Experience in startups or high-growth environments, with comfort operating with ambiguity and shifting priorities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive Salary
  • Premium Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): 15 Days
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Wellhub Membership - Access a wide range of gyms and training programs.
  • Sports Incentive - Receive a monthly bonus when you regularly participate in physical activities.
  • Long-Term Benefit - After four years of service, earn a fully funded trip anywhere in the world.
