Job description

We're thrilled to welcome an early in career Product Development Engineer to our Mortise Team at ASSA ABLOY!

Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, you will spearhead product improvements, cost reduction initiatives, and develop new products. As a key player on our team, you'll develop cutting-edge mechanical and electromechanical systems solving complex problems. You will also be expected to maintain and manage documentation, ensuring it reflects the latest changes and developments.

This position full-time on-site in our New Haven, CT facility.

What you will be doing 

  • Innovative Product Development: Generate, initiate, and contribute new product ideas, product improvements, and cost reduction strategies based on market needs.
  • Robust Product Design: Create durable product designs using design reviews and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) tools.
  • Peer Review and Mentorship: Review peers' work in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), FMEA, and Product Introduction Process (PIP) Gateway.
  • Engineering Change Management: Initiate and complete Engineering Change Requests and Product Change Proposals.
  • CAD Design: Develop 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Production Center teams to enhance product quality.
  • Test Planning and Support: Design test plans, interpret data, and provide technical support to the Test Lab.
  • Cost and Value Analysis: Lead cost and value tradeoff analysis (VA/VE).
  • Standards Compliance: Follow engineering standards and procedures.
  • Project Reporting: Provide written and/or verbal interim project reports and timelines.
  • Task Management: Estimate time and cost to complete tasks and manage a task queue.

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related field of study is required.
  • 2-5+ years of experience in a mechanical product development environment.
  • Technical understanding of product design and development processes, including product construction, materials, and manufacturing methods.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD, MS Office Suite, and general PC skills.
  • Fluent in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis, and process capability.
  • Ability to communicate clearly through various media, including hand sketches, modeling, technical drawings, and project summaries.
  • Capable of creating and supporting system-level designs.
  • Ability to identify problems quickly and develop and test effective solutions.
  • Excellent mechanical ability to understand concepts and processes both conceptually and hands-on.
  • Knowledge of integrating electro-mechanical and electronic components into mechanical designs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and collaborate with product and project management on large-scale projects.
  • Fluent in selecting appropriate materials and processes for various applications.
