Job description

Overview:

Working at Atlassian

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. This role has a preference you be located in the San Francisco Bay Area or US West Coast, but we can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.

About the Role

As a Lead Design Technologist, you lead projects and make decisions that impact multiple departments. You are responsible for delivering high-quality, scalable design technology solutions that enable all product builders across Atlassian, enabling PM/Eng/Design peers, and driving innovation in prototyping, motion, and AI-led design workflows.

You’ll join the Design Technology team within the Core Design org reporting to the Senior Manager for Design Technology. Design Technologists are a multidisciplinary group building the foundational tools, components, and AI-native product builder workflows that power the user experience across all Atlassian apps. Members of our team come from diverse backgrounds including design, engineering, and product with a focus on both the product builder and user experience.

The team partners closely with product, engineering, and accessibility experts to create scalable, inclusive, and coherent design solutions at enterprise scale. You’ll shape the future of Atlassian’s product building culture, champion best practices, and accelerate innovation through AI tooling and AI-toolchain workflow improvements for all of Atlassian Design.

Responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-quality design technology solutions across multiple workstreams or domains.

  • Champion rapid prototyping, user testing, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Mentor and guide less experienced designers and technologists.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance design workflows through custom tooling and automation.

  • Solve complex design technology issues, optimizing processes and leveraging AI/LLMs.

  • Demonstrate advanced skills in JS frameworks, prototyping, and motion design.

  • Lead the co-creation of sense-making artifacts (blueprints, models) to communicate design concepts.

  • Drive adoption of best practices in design technology and contribute to continuous improvement.

Compensation:

At Atlassian, we strive to design equitable, explainable, and competitive compensation programs. We follow consistent hiring practices and account for each candidate's skills, knowledge, and experience when setting base pay within the range.

Please visit go.atlassian.com/payzones for more information on which locations are included in each of our geographic pay zones. However, please confirm the zone for your specific location with your recruiter.

This role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

Pay Ranges:

In The United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:

Zone A: $192,600 - $251,450

Zone B: $173,340 - $226,305

Zone C: $159,858 - $208,704

Qualifications:
  • 7+ years experience leading a high-performing design or design technology craft domain

  • Experience building interactive and rich media experiences that showcase motion, interaction design, and high visual craft

  • Fluent with the latest AI product building workflows and fundamentals (agentic loops, generative UI/UX, evals, and context engineering best practices)

  • Strong skills in front-end engineering concepts, prototyping, AI tools, as well as integrations with visual design tools such as Figma.

  • Experience mentoring and coaching others.

  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to a wide audience.

  • Ability to drive cross-functional projects and influence stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML, motion, and accessibility in design.
