What is product control?

Product Control is a key function within financial institutions, particularly investment banks, responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting relating to trading activities. The team works closely with traders, risk managers, and finance departments to reconcile and analyze profit and loss (P&L), validate balance sheet items, and ensure compliance with accounting standards. Their work helps identify errors, prevent losses, and support regulatory reporting, making them essential to the financial health and transparency of the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product control professional, and why are they important?

Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication enable professionals to accurately report and analyze trading results while collaborating with front office and risk teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and timely decision-making within financial institutions.

How does the product control team typically collaborate with Front Office, Risk, and Finance departments?

Product Control professionals regularly interact with Front Office teams to verify the accuracy of trading activities, resolve discrepancies, and ensure proper valuation of financial products.
