This role in summary
Whirlpool is looking for a Product Development Sr. Engineer for our Motors team. The engineer will be responsible for global Motors deliverables, including development, execution, verification & validation, working with global x-functional teams during various phases of projects & across various technologies such as structural mechanics, plastics, sheet metal, rubber, ceramics, etc.
This is an onsite role at our St. Joseph Tech Center in Michigan.
Your responsibilities will include
  • Develop Motors with Whirlpool appliances focusing on Laundry
  • Lead technical developments of motors with key internal X-function stakeholders and external suppliers.
  • Accountable for validation plan definition and related assessment at component level on technical maturity vs expectations.
  • Accountable for driving New Product Development / Cost & Quality projects for Laundry business with a focus on Laundry Powertrain (Motors & drive system components).
  • Communicate and align large X-functional teams in a global environment. Leadership on driving suppliers technical reviews
  • Resolve complex technical problems, based on data analysis and OpEx (6sigma) approach.
  • Take risk weighted decisions where trade off are needed
  • Lead multiple projects simultaneously & drive them to implementation using the project management tools & closely working with design, product approval, manufacturing, assembling & interface teams.
  • Concept development, design creation, concept evaluation, selection, verification, validation & implementation into production.
  • Work passionately on innovation, focusing on consumers by generating concepts to help product development & ensuring leadership of the company on technology & performance of products.
  • Fine-tuning of concepts (Hand calculations, Fit & Function, material selection, DFM / DFA), & drive design using Six Sigma or OPEX Tools, apply GD&T, stack up, & perform drawing reviews.
  • Drive module-level requirements, functional decomposition of requirements, perform FMEA & work with stakeholders on verification & validation plans.
  • Work with the product approval team to create test plans, write lab requests & coordinate with the labs to perform the tests, & with a quality team to run PPAP, as well as releasing parts & assemblies within the PLM tool.
  • Understanding & reviewing simulation reports & incorporating recommendations into the design.
  • Constant & straight communication with GSS & suppliers to work on the development of products & alignment of roadmaps & strategy plans around specific modules & attributes to help reduce complexity.
  • Support roadmaps Administrative functions: Training, Team Building, New Products Introduction & Cost & Quality projects Coordination, etc.
  • Availability for travel, regional and/or international (may be once a quarter on average).

Minimum requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Aeronautics or Automobile Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in product development with project management skills managing multiple projects in parallel

Preferred skills and experiences
  • Master's Degree in an engineering
  • Problem-solving approach with OPEX or Six Sigma Black Belt certification
  • Experience working with motors or rotative mechanical and/or electromechanical components
  • Experience in the selection & application of materials for component design
  • Experience facilitating effective communication across teams
  • Experience launching products into the market
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a matrix environment
  • Knowledge of UL
  • Knowledge of APQP(advanced product quality planning) experience
  • Understanding & reviewing simulation (FEM, FEA, CFD, CAD) reports & incorporating recommendations into design
  • Proficient in English language (Read, write & speak)
  • Hands-on experience in problem solving
  • Proven proactivity on project execution
