What does a produce quality inspector do?

A Produce Quality Inspector is responsible for examining fruits, vegetables, and other produce to ensure they meet specific quality and safety standards. They look for signs of damage, spoilage, ripeness, and contamination, and may also check for correct labeling and packaging. Their work helps maintain food safety throughout the supply chain and ensures customers receive high-quality produce. Inspectors often work in warehouses, distribution centers, or at points of import and export.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a produce quality inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Produce Quality Inspector, you need expertise in food safety standards, quality control procedures, and experience with agricultural products, often supported by a background in food science or agriculture. Familiarity with inspection tools, data entry systems, and certifications like HACCP or USDA inspection credentials is frequently required. Attention to detail, strong observational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for accurately assessing product quality and collaborating with suppliers. These skills ensure that only safe, high-quality produce reaches consumers, protecting public health and reducing supply chain losses.

What are some common challenges faced by produce quality inspectors, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Produce Quality Inspectors often face challenges such as managing varying quality standards among suppliers, working in fast-paced environments, and identifying subtle defects in produce. To address these issues, inspectors rely on clear communication with suppliers and team members, continuous training on updated quality standards, and the use of standardized checklists and tools. Staying organized and maintaining meticulous records also help ensure consistency and accuracy in inspections, which is crucial for food safety and customer satisfaction.

What qualifications do I need to be a produce quality inspector?

Produce quality inspectors typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and should have good attention to detail, sensory evaluation skills, and knowledge of food safety standards. Some employers prefer candidates with experience in food production or quality control, and certifications such as HACCP can be beneficial. Key responsibilities

  • Supervise and schedule a team of Quality Inspectors across assigned shifts

  • Inspect raw materials and finished products for conformance to drawings and specifications

  • Lead First Article Inspections and oversee in-process and final inspection activities

Job description

*This role is being filled directly. We do not accept unsolicited outreach from staffing agencies or third-party recruiters. Applications and referrals submitted by third-party recruiters will not be accepted, reviewed, or eligible for placement fees.

About the Role

We're hiring a Quality Control Supervisor to lead our inspection team and ensure every part we ship meets aerospace-grade standards. This is a hands-on, floor-based leadership role; you'll supervise Quality Inspectors, run first article inspections, and make sure nonconforming parts never make it out the door. If you know AS9100, love precision work, and want to lead a team on the floor, this is your role.

What You'll Do
  • Supervise and schedule a team of Quality Inspectors across assigned shifts
  • Inspect raw materials and finished products (tubing, assemblies, fittings, machined parts, castings) for conformance to drawings and specs
  • Lead First Article Inspections (FAI) and complete AS9102 Forms 1, 2, and 3
  • Oversee in-process and final inspection, plus functional testing of parts and assemblies
  • Generate Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) and communicate findings to QA and area managers
  • Maintain calibration schedules for inspection and measuring equipment
  • Train inspectors on GD&T, inspection methods, and use of measuring instruments
  • Produce customer documentation including DIPs, FAIRs, and Certificates of Conformance
  • Flag process or supplier trends to Quality Assurance for follow-up
What You Bring
  • 2+ years of lead or supervisory experience in a quality control role, ideally in aerospace
  • Working knowledge of AS9100 inspection requirements and GD&T
  • Comfort reading blueprints and using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, CMM, gauges)
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems (Visual Manufacturing a plus)
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office 365 skills
  • Sharp attention to detail, you catch what others miss
  • Associate's degree, or higher, preferred; a field related to quality, engineering, or manufacturing is a plus.
Certifications
  • ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or similar designation preferred
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt (minimum) is a plus

Why Work Here

  • Comprehensive medical coverage, vision, dental
  • Paid sick leave and paid vacation
  • 401k retirement plan
  • Costco membership
