Credentials / Licenses:

Required: Valid Class A, Class B, or Class D commercial driver's license; current DOT medical examiner's certificate; clean driving record per company standard.

Preferred: Additional CDL endorsements (Hazmat, Tanker, Air Brakes); OSHA-certified forklift / pallet jack operator card.

Wage / Salary Range:

$20.00 - $25.00 per hour (D.O.E. and credentials)

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Delivery Driver (Short Range) is responsible for transporting fresh produce from the Westwego warehouse to local and regional customers within scheduled same-day delivery windows. This role serves as the company's customer-facing representative and is essential to cold-chain integrity, on-time service, and the overall reputation of Matrana's Produce across our customer base. Primary responsibilities include operating the assigned vehicle under DOT regulations, completing pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, unloading product at customer locations, collecting signatures and payments, and communicating delivery exceptions. The ideal candidate is safety-minded, customer-focused, dependable, and able to work independently within the structure of a perishable supply chain where accuracy, hygiene, and a professional appearance shape every customer interaction.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Core duties are listed in approximate order of operational importance. Each duty is part of the role's expected daily, weekly, or per-route execution.

Operates the assigned delivery vehicle safely and in compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and Louisiana traffic regulations on every route.

Delivers produce to assigned customers within the scheduled delivery window while maintaining cold-chain integrity at all times.

Inspects the assigned vehicle before and after each route using the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) process.

Verifies load count and product condition against the delivery manifest before departure and again at each customer stop.

Unloads pallets, cases, and product at customer locations using a pallet jack, hand truck, or other approved equipment.

Obtains customer signatures, delivery confirmations, and payments at the point of delivery as required by route instructions.

Reconciles delivery tickets, signed proofs of delivery, and any collected payments with dispatch upon return to the facility.

Communicates delivery exceptions, customer issues, and route delays to dispatch within 15 minutes of occurrence using a hands-free device.

Performs basic vehicle checks (tires, fluids, lights, fuel) and reports defects to the Mechanic Shop immediately.

Maintains hours-of-service records and other DOT-required documentation accurately and submits them by the end of each shift.

Assists the warehouse team with order pulling, loading, and pallet staging when route schedule allows.

Adheres to food safety, sanitation, and HACCP-awareness standards during all loading, transport, and unloading activities.

Maintains a professional appearance, hygiene, and customer-service demeanor consistent with Matrana's Produce brand expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Experience: 3+ years of commercial driving experience. Skills: Safe operation of commercial vehicles up to and including the assigned vehicle class; customer-service communication; basic math (addition and subtraction for invoice and payment reconciliation); functional English literacy sufficient to read product numbers, slot locations, and delivery manifests; ability to follow written instructions and write legibly. Credentials: Valid Class A, Class B, or Class D CDL recognized in Louisiana; current DOT medical examiner's certificate; clean driving record per company standard; personal hands-free communication device.

Preferred: Education: Defensive-driving or DOT-compliance training certificate. Experience: Prior produce, food, or refrigerated freight delivery experience; bilingual English/Spanish. Skills: Familiarity with hand-held delivery scanners and electronic logging devices (ELDs); pallet jack and forklift operation. Credentials: Additional CDL endorsements (Hazmat, Tanker, Air Brakes); OSHA-certified forklift operator card.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & SCHEDULE

Temperature: Loading occurs in a refrigerated environment (35-40F). Deliveries occur in outdoor and customer-facility conditions, including ambient and refrigerated areas. Truck cabs are climate-controlled.

Noise Level: Moderate to high - hearing protection may be required during loading and forklift-traffic exposure.

Exposure Hazards: Forklift traffic, slick or wet floors, diesel fumes, road traffic, customer-site congestion, occasional outdoor heat or rain exposure.

Required PPE: weather-appropriate outerwear.

DOT / FMCSA Compliance Note: This is a safety-sensitive position subject to U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, including driver qualification standards (49 CFR Part 391), hours-of-service rules (49 CFR Part 395), and drug-and-alcohol testing requirements (49 CFR Part 382). The driver must hold and maintain a valid CDL and a current DOT medical examiner's certificate at all times during employment.
