Job description

What you'll do:ย 

  • Receive, label, and prepare soil samples for laboratory testing
  • Perform tests including moisture content, Atterberg limits, Proctors, sieve analysis, hydrometer, and density calculations
  • Operate laboratory equipment (ovens, balances, compactors, shakers, hydrometers, etc.)
  • Record test data accurately on worksheets, spreadsheets, or LIMS
  • Verify calculations for dry density, percent passing, corrections, and classification data
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and equipment
  • Communicate unusual or nonconforming results to leadership
  • Participate in certification and competency training
  • Transport samples from plant locations to lab for testingย 
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requiredย 

What you'll need:ย 

  • High school diploma or GED (Associateโ€™s/Bachelorโ€™s in science or engineering, preferred)
  • Experience in a soils / geotechnical / construction materials lab, preferredย 
  • Strong math and measurement skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to drive within the Greater Houston Area
  • Willingness to follow ASTM/AASHTO/TxDOT procedures and written instructions
  • Familiarity with TxDOT, City of Houston, and Harris County testing procedures
  • Experience with Proctors, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, or hydrometer analysis
  • NICET Soils Level I or II certification or interest in obtaining
  • TxDOT SB101, 103, 201, 202 certification or interest in obtaining
  • Experience with LIMS or QC digital data entry systems

Working conditions:

  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in a physical laboratory environment
  • Ability to stand, sit, stoop, bend for several hours per day and work for long periods without a break
