Process Technology Internships information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process technology intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Technology Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of chemistry, process operations, and safety protocols, often supported by coursework or a degree in process technology or a related field. Familiarity with process simulation software, industrial equipment, and safety management systems is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help interns stand out in collaborative and safety-focused environments. These skills and qualifications are essential for supporting efficient, safe, and compliant operations within industrial or manufacturing settings.

What are process technology internships?

Process Technology Internships are temporary, hands-on training opportunities for students or recent graduates interested in the field of process technology. These internships typically take place in industries such as manufacturing, chemical processing, oil and gas, or pharmaceuticals. Interns gain experience working with equipment, monitoring systems, and learning about process control and safety procedures. The goal is to provide practical skills and industry insights that prepare participants for full-time roles as process technicians or operators after graduation.

What is the difference between Process Technology Internships vs Process Engineer?

AspectProcess Technology InternshipsProcess Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduates in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineeringBachelor's or master's degree in engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship settings within manufacturing or processing plants, supervised learningFull-time roles in plant operations, process design, and optimization
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training and talent development in manufacturing industriesFull-time professional roles in similar industries, responsible for process improvements

Process Technology Internships are entry-level, short-term training positions aimed at students or recent graduates, focusing on gaining practical experience. Process Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining manufacturing processes. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward a career as a Process Engineer, with overlapping skills but different levels of responsibility and experience.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a process technology internship?

As a Process Technology Intern, you'll typically be involved in hands-on projects supporting process optimization, troubleshooting plant operations, and collaborating with experienced engineers and technicians. Daily tasks may include collecting and analyzing production data, assisting with equipment inspections, and participating in process improvement initiatives. You'll have opportunities to learn industry best practices, work with cross-functional teams, and gain exposure to safety protocols and compliance standards. This practical experience is designed to prepare you for a full-time role in process technology upon graduation.

Typical Degree Programs Sought Include: (Nuclear, Renewable, Intelligent Systems, Hybrid Energy, Economic Analysis, Geology, Environmental Engineering, Anthropology, Earth & Life Sciences, Materials, Chemistry, Biology, Industrial/Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ecology)
ย
Please note that if you are interested in other INL internship categories in addition to this one, you will need to complete the application for each of those categories as well. Most of the information you provide while completing the initial application carries over to your new applications. You will have to review your previously submitted information in each step, ensure it is complete and then click the submit button on the final step.
ย

The Opportunity:

ย

Internships at Idaho National Laboratoryย ย

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) hosts over 300 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INL's mission.ย ย Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in various operations and business disciplines.

Join INL's team and find your exceptional educational experience in a real-world work environment.ย ย INL offers a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, innovate and conduct research with top researchers and professionals.

The Deliverables:

Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship.ย ย For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and guidance to the intern.ย ย In addition to regular activities, interns are invited to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events designed with career development in mind.ย ย Completion of a final project is highly recommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditional poster, electronic presentation or video.

The Process:

Through this single application, you are considered for all internship projects related to INLย Energy and Environment Progrmas. Simply complete the application questions which will help us identify what knowledge and experience you already have that may be related to the preferred qualifications for each individual internship project. It is common for applicants to receive consideration for multiple projects at varying times throughout the process. Mentors will make direct contact with applicants who meet their project qualifications to share the specific details of the project. On average, INL plans for approximately 300 internships each year.ย ย Most internships provide flexibility with start and end dates to account for varying university term schedules.ย ย We encourage early applications to increase the number of opportunities available to you.

The Projects:

INL works to optimize hybrid energy systems that expand the nation's integrated energy portfolio to ensureย power is available when it is needed most. To reduce the environmental impact of energy extraction, INL scientists conduct geomechanical modeling and benchmarking, develop nuclear fuel codes and used fuel systems engineering, plus develop options for nuclear and radiological materials disposition. Some projects interns have participated in recently include:

--Student will aid in the development and parameterization of earth models targeting enhanced geothermal systems in sedimentary rocks. Recommended skill sets include a working knowledge of software packages commonly used by the oil and gas industry for developing earth models, knowledge of statistical techniques to populate earth models using indirect measurements such as seismic inversion, and a general strong background in subsurface science. Selected candidates must be capable of working in a collaborative team environment and will willing to spend time in a field setting.

--The student will preform various process improvement and development tasks for the Research Operations group within the Energy and Environment Science and Technology Directorate.ย  The successful candidate will participate on the EES&T R&D data collection team and will work to develop and streamline various reporting solutions, customize EES&T's internal SharePoint site collection, and help establish the SharePoint infrastructure for simple and intuitive long-term maintenance within the directorate.

Student studying chemistry or chemical engineering. Completion of classes in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, or instrumental analysis is desired.ย  The student will get hands on experience using a number of analytical instruments to characterize room temperature ionic liquids. This work will lead to a publication and fulfillment of university report requirements.

--Student enrollment in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related field. The student will work with experts to develop an algorithm for quantifying financial risk in supply chain logistics using the Excel add-in @Risk, published by Palisades Corp. Student will be responsible for entering data and developing code to use in the algorithm.ย

--The student will be carrying out quantitative characterization of microstructures in advanced structural materials intended for high temperature power generation. In collaboration with INL staff the student will correlate experimental observations of material structure with measured elevated creep and creep-fatigue behavior. It is anticipated that at the end of the internship the student will be in a position to related the structure and properties to underlying mechanisms of deformation and fracture.
