What is process piping?

A Process Piping job involves designing, fabricating, installing, and maintaining piping systems that transport fluids or gases in industrial facilities like power plants, refineries, and chemical plants. Unlike plumbing, which deals with water and waste in buildings, process piping is used for manufacturing processes and must meet specific industry codes. Professionals in this field work with materials like steel, copper, and specialized alloys to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a process piping professional?

In a Process Piping role, your daily responsibilities often include designing and drafting piping systems, reviewing project specifications, and selecting appropriate materials for various industrial applications. You'll regularly coordinate with other engineers and project stakeholders to ensure design compliance and resolve technical issues as they arise. Site visits for inspections, collaborating on project timelines, and updating documentation are also common aspects of the job. This dynamic mix of desk and field work ensures that no two days are exactly alike and provides opportunities to build both technical and collaborative skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for process piping?

To excel in Process Piping, you need a solid understanding of piping design principles, fluid dynamics, and industry codes such as ASME, typically supported by engineering or technical training. Familiarity with CAD software, pipe stress analysis programs, and professional certifications like the ASME B31.3 qualification are frequently required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this field. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant piping systems in complex industrial projects.

Job description

Design complex systems that actually get built
At Valdes Architecture & Engineering, you won't just produce drawings-you'll lead the design of piping systems that support real industrial operations across energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure.
We're looking for a Senior Piping Designer who wants ownership, variety, and the opportunity to mentor others while working on technically challenging projects.
What You'll Do
  • Lead piping design and plant layout for industrial projects from concept through construction
  • Develop 3D models, layouts, and detailed design deliverables
  • Collaborate with mechanical, structural, electrical, and I&C teams
  • Review vendor drawings and ensure design quality and constructability
  • Support field work and solve real-world issues during execution
  • Guide and mentor junior designers

Where You'll Make An Impact
  • Own multiple projects-balancing quality, schedule, and budget
  • Improve design standards, workflows, and best practices
  • Play a key role in interdisciplinary coordination
  • Help shape how projects are delivered-not just execute them

What You Bring
  • Core experience:
    • 8+ years of piping design experience
    • Strong background in plant layout and industrial systems
    • Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD tools (AutoCAD or similar)

You'll stand out if you have:
    • Experience with multi-discipline project environments
    • Knowledge of stress analysis and in-line instrumentation
    • Experience mentoring or leading designers
    • SPED PPD Certified applicants preferred

What You'll Gain
  • Real ownership-not just task execution
  • Exposure to complex industrial projects across multiple industries
  • A path to Lead Designer, Project Manager, or Technical Specialist roles
  • Opportunities to influence standards and improve how work gets done

Why Valdes?
  • Work across disciplines-no silos
  • Direct access to leadership and decision-makers
  • Flexible work environment
  • Strong tenure and a culture of internal growth
  • Projects that move beyond design into real-world execution

$90,000 - $150,000 a year
Salaries for all positions are based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, total years of experience in the industry, education, skills, and qualifications. Compensation may vary depending on the candidate's individual background and expertise. Salaries are subject to fluctuation outside of the given range.
