Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Designer shall work in a team environment to develop accurate, constructible, coordinated, and timely Mechanical Piping system models meeting McKenney’s drafting standards and fully coordinated with the architectural & structural elements of the building and the other building trades (sprinkler, ductwork, piping, etc.). A Mechanical Piping designer will also be responsible for providing accurate shop drawings that support the construction team. The designer will report to the modeling supervisor and be responsible for interacting with the fabrication supervisor, detailers, project managers, project engineers, and field foreman.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Utilize McKenney’s CAD standards to create mechanical piping models that are consistent with company and project requirements.

• Accurately model Mechanical Piping systems in compliance with project plans, project specifications, and code requirements for the purposes of producing fabrication documents (spool sheets and drawings) from the model.

• Coordinate all Mechanical Piping systems with: ductwork, mechanical equipment, other trades, and architectural and structural elements of the building.

• Coordinate all Mechanical Piping to provide safe and adequate access in accordance with manufacturer and code clearances to avoid installation conflicts in the field.

• Utilize the fabrication team to provide annotated, dimensioned shop drawings, spool assemblies, and spool drawings.

• Review and distribute fabrication information including assembly sheets and spool drawings to project managers and field leaders.

• Effectively and proactively communicate with project managers, project engineers, and field foremen during the drafting and construction process. This includes communication of challenges and schedule progress on a timely basis (weekly at a minimum).

• Use Company tools to manage requests for information and shop drawing progress.

• Proactively identify and communicate areas of deficiency/gaps along with proposed solutions on projects to support timely completion of work.

• Work with project manager and field foreman to create As-Built condition drawings for projects.

• Produce all documents on time and within budget (estimated drafting hours) in a timely manner based on job requirements to meet commitments to our customers, both internal and external.

• Willingness to seek knowledge from others.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED

• Minimum of 3 years working in the Mechanical Piping trade or 3 years of Mechanical Piping design experience using AutoCAD 2014 or higher and 3-D drafting packages

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with Mechanical Piping drafting using Autodesk Fabrication CADmep software.

• Ability to layout and size mechanical piping and similar activities.

• 2-year associate degree in drafting or a similar area.

• Ability to visualize three-dimensional layouts from two-dimensional drawings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS

• Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents.

• Must be a self-starter, with ability to work well as part of a team and independently.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Commitment to detail and deadlines.

• Must have a professional appearance.

• Ability to use time productively, maximize efficiency, and meet challenging work goals

• Ability to take on additional responsibilities as needed as well as determine and manage priorities with minimal guidance.

• Must have basic PC experience in Windows environments, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, Web-enabled applications, and database software
