What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Operator, you need a solid understanding of industrial processes, safety protocols, and typically a high school diploma or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with control systems like DCS/SCADA, equipment maintenance, and safety certifications such as OSHA are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation of machinery, minimizing risks and maximizing productivity in industrial settings.

What Does a Process Operator Do?

A process operator is a skilled industrial professional who works as part of a team, or individually, to manage a safe and effective production process within a manufacturing plant, facility, or refinery. Process operators are charged with monitoring the equipment, machinery, and instruments within the facility and troubleshooting when issues arise. As a process operator, it is important to inspect equipment and maintain records of all updates, repairs, and replacements.

What are Process Operators?

Process Operators are professionals responsible for managing and overseeing the machinery and systems that produce goods in industries such as manufacturing, chemical processing, and oil and gas. Their duties include monitoring equipment, adjusting controls to maintain quality and safety, and troubleshooting any issues that arise during production. They play a critical role in ensuring production runs smoothly, efficiently, and safely, often working as part of a larger operations team. Process Operators must adhere to strict safety protocols and may be required to document production data or perform routine maintenance.

What are some common challenges faced by Process Operators during shift work, and how can they be managed?

Process Operators often work in rotating shifts to ensure continuous plant operation, which can present challenges such as adjusting to changing sleep schedules and managing fatigue. To address these issues, operators are encouraged to maintain healthy sleep habits, communicate openly with team members about workload distribution, and utilize scheduled breaks effectively. Many facilities also offer training on shift work management and provide support resources to help employees adapt, ensuring both safety and productivity are maintained.

The Process Operator oversees all aspects of the fermentation process in the manufacturing of yeast, ensuring safe, efficient, and consistent production. This role involves batch preparation, monitoring and adjusting process parameters such as temperature, pH, and flow, and performing in-house testing in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs). The Process Operator works both in the control room and in the field, supporting utility and fermentation operations while maintaining high standards of quality, cleanliness, and safety in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all stages of the yeast fermentation process from raw material input through batch completion.
  • Prepare and manage batch making processes, including accurately feeding raw materials into the system according to established formulas and SOPs.
  • Monitor and control key process parameters such as temperature, pH, and flow using control room systems and logic controllers.
  • Perform in-house testing for pH and ethanol using an ethanol meter, including proper calibration of the meter and strict adherence to SOPs.
  • Check product temperatures regularly and make necessary adjustments to maintain process stability and product quality.
  • Operate control room equipment to monitor process conditions, respond to alarms, and optimize production performance.
  • Support utility operator and fermentation operator processes, stepping in to handle fermentation responsibilities when needed.
  • Hook up and disconnect hoses safely to move product and materials between tanks and process areas.
  • Clean and sanitize tanks, equipment, and work areas to maintain high standards of plant cleanliness and food safety.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions while performing process and general labor tasks.
  • Follow quality control procedures to ensure products meet specifications and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Comply with all safety guidelines, SOPs, and regulatory requirements while handling equipment, chemicals, and raw materials.
  • Assist with troubleshooting process issues and collaborate with team members to resolve problems promptly.
  • Support plant performance goals related to customer satisfaction, budget adherence, and facility cleanliness.
  • Participate in cross-training for both utility and fermentation operations to provide flexible coverage across the plant.
  • Be available to work overtime as needed to cover vacations, call-outs, and production demands.
  • Maintain accurate records of process data, test results, and any adjustments made during production.
Essential Skills
  • Associate’s degree required, preferably in a science discipline such as biology, chemistry, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of manufacturing experience, preferably within a fast-paced, production-driven food environment.
  • Experience with control room operations and monitoring process equipment.
  • Foundational knowledge of biology and chemistry as applied to fermentation and food manufacturing.
  • Ability to perform quality control testing, including pH measurements and ethanol testing using an ethanol meter.
  • Competence in calibrating and using meters and instruments in accordance with SOPs.
  • Ability to monitor and control temperature, pH, and flow parameters throughout the process.
  • Comfort working in and out of the plant in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely climb and work at heights as needed for tank access and equipment checks.
  • Capability to hook up and disconnect hoses safely and correctly.
  • Willingness and physical ability to perform general labor tasks, including cleaning tanks and process areas.
  • Strong multitasking skills and the ability to manage multiple process activities simultaneously.
  • Resilience and composure, with the ability to stay focused and not become easily overwhelmed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to work a rotating 12-hour shift schedule and to be available for overtime as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in food or fermentation manufacturing environments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with logic controllers and automated process control systems.
  • Previous exposure to utility operations and fermentation processes.
  • Strong attention to detail when following SOPs and documenting process information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, cleanliness, and quality standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented production environment.
  • Motivated, proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and take on additional responsibilities over time.
Why Work Here?

Employees have clear opportunities to grow into other positions throughout the plant, allowing them to build a long-term career while expanding their skills. The organization rewards learning and successful completion of training with pay increases and offers a structured path for progression beyond the initial role. Team members can benefit from a competitive retirement program with a 401(k) match and additional monthly bonus opportunities tied to customer satisfaction, budget performance, and plant cleanliness. The culture emphasizes continuous improvement, shared responsibility for plant performance, and recognition for contributions to quality and efficiency.

The position requires working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, climbing to access equipment, and performing physical tasks such as hooking up hoses and cleaning tanks.
