What is a process engineer?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and optimize industrial processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in manufacturing or production environments. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot process issues, and develop solutions to enhance productivity and reduce costs. Process Engineers often work in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and energy, ensuring processes are compliant with environmental and safety regulations. Their work is vital for maintaining smooth operations and achieving organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and understanding of process optimization principles. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or AutoCAD), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to improve efficiency, ensure safety, and drive continuous improvement in industrial and manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges process engineers face when implementing process improvements, and how can they overcome them?

Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, integrating new technologies with existing systems, and ensuring process changes meet regulatory standards. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves clear communication, involving stakeholders early in the process, thorough documentation, and piloting changes before full-scale implementation. Building strong cross-functional relationships and continuously gathering feedback also help ensure that improvements are effective and sustainable.

What is the difference between Process Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectProcess EngineerManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six SigmaBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Lean Manufacturing
Work EnvironmentDesigning and optimizing processes, R&D settingsOverseeing production lines, factory floors
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, aerospaceAutomotive, electronics, consumer goods

Process Engineers focus on designing and improving manufacturing processes, often working in R&D or engineering departments. Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on implementing and managing production on the factory floor. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ mainly in their scope and work environment.

What jobs can a process engineer do?

A process engineer designs, develops, and optimizes manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety. They work in industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and automotive, often using tools like process simulation software and requiring knowledge of quality standards and safety regulations.

Job description

Senior Automation & Controls Design Engineer

Overviewย Join Moonshot's high-performance engineering team as a Senior Automation & Controls Design Engineer, where you'll apply advanced automation and electrical design expertise to develop the control systems powering next-generation AI and data center infrastructure. This role focuses on designing, programming, and commissioning UL891 switchboards, UL508A industrial control panels, and related control systems supporting high-power AI infrastructure.ย The ideal candidate is an experienced automation and controls professional-not necessarily an engineer by trade-who understands how to design, program, and commission reliable systems. You'll work hands-on with SolidWorks Electrical, field startup, and commissioning, collaborating closely with our engineering, production, and field teams to deliver precision-engineered solutions that uphold Moonshot's standards of excellence.ย Key Responsibilitiesย
  1. Design, draft, and develop control system schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams for UL891 and UL508A assemblies
  2. Configure and program PLCs, relays, and automation devices to execute advanced power control and sequencing logic.
  3. Integrate and troubleshoot Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, and Ethernet/IP systems for high-reliability operation.
  4. Develop and verify interlock logic, sequencing, and fail-safe systems for complex power and automation environments.
  5. Support on-site commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of control systems to ensure safety, performance, and compliance.
  6. Design and validate systems in accordance with UL508A, UL891, and NEC Article 409 standards.
  7. Produce complete documentation packages (wiring diagrams, BOMs, I/O lists) with high accuracy and clarity.
  8. Partner with engineering, manufacturing, and field personnel to ensure designs translate seamlessly from concept to installation.
  9. Identify and implement process and design improvements to increase manufacturability, reliability, and control performance.
  10. Maintain Moonshot's internal safety, quality, and compliance standards throughout the design and commissioning.
ย Qualificationsย
  • 5+ years of experience in automation, controls design, or electrical systems integration in industrial, manufacturing, or power systems environments.
  • Technical degree in automation, electrical engineering, or a related field - or equivalent hands-on professional experience.
  • Strong knowledge of UL508A, UL891, NEC Article 409, and industrial control panel standards
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks Electrical for schematic design, panel layout, and documentation (AutoCAD Electrical is a plus).
  • Experience with PLC programming and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, or Ethernet/IP.
  • Hands-on experience with system testing, commissioning, and field integration of automation or power systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills in fast-paced engineering environments.

Professional Skills:

  • High attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across departments.
  • Self-motivated and capable of executing in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.

Preferred:

  • UL508A Panel Design Certification or experience in a UL listed manufacturing shop.
  • Experience with data center, AI infrastructure, or large-scale industrial automation projects.

Why Moonshot?

  • Career Growth: Accelerate your career in a high-growth company with clear advancement opportunities and access to ongoing professional development in the AI/data center infrastructure space.
  • Mentorship and Training: Learn alongside experienced engineering and production teams, with hands-on support to sharpen your design, commissioning, and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Innovative Culture: Be part of a collaborative, forward-thinking team that values practical problem-solving, high standards, and continuous improvement.
