Job description

Job Title: Controls Engineer

Work Place Flexibility: Onsite

 ***This position may be filled as an Engineer II, III or Sr. depending on the qualifications and or the experience of the candidate.***

Job Summary/Purpose

Act as the company liaison and technical support for Grid Technology’s relay controls and automation, SCADA integration, and circuit protection logic. Serve as the analytics liaison between engineering and data analytics teams, translating technical requirements into data-driven insights and solutions.  Project areas may include advanced distribution management system (ADMS), fault location isolation and service restoration systems (FLISR), invertor-based resource (IBR) protection, and volt-var optimization projects. The job will include working with controls for reclosers, capacitors, voltage regulators, switchgear, and any other microprocessor-based utility controls. This role will work out of Entergy’s state of the art Grid Technology Lab in New Orleans, LA with a technical team of engineers and analysts.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance, and support distribution relay settings templates for reclosers, regulators, capacitors, switchgear, and other SCADA capable devices
  • Create and maintain SCADA standards for distribution relays that are aligned with the Distribution Management System and are compliant with IT, OT, and security standards
  • Provide technical support to Distribution Automation Protection Engineers, Field Support Specialist, and Operations as it relates to field equipment automation and communications
  • Responsible for relay settings file standards and processes in relay asset management system
  • Work with Transmission organization to develop standards compliant with the distribution management system project
  • Complete firmware and settings modification testing for devices on SCADA and associated change management
  • Participate in routine, non-routine, and emergency storm and outage restoration duties
  • Ability to leverage AI (Artificial Intelligence) and data analytics tools to explore use cases for applying AI to system data in a laboratory environment.
  • Data analytics and utility distribution data analysis
  • Power BI for data visualization and reporting
  • JavaScript and VBA for automation and scripting
  • Microsoft Power Apps for application development

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

Bachelor’s degree in engineering Discipline (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution.

Degrees in engineering technology (typically, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution with a PE may be considered.

Desired: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Degree

Minimum experience required of the position

Engineer II - 2+ years’ experience in an engineering discipline.

Engineer III - 4+ years’ experience in an engineering discipline.

Engineer Sr - 6+ years’ experience in an engineering discipline.

Desired: Distribution utility/operations experience.

 Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position

Technical mastery of engineering principles.  In-depth knowledge of technical writing of procedures, programs, and standards in responsible area.  Consistently drives for value in sound engineering decisions.  Mentor’s other engineers and technical professionals.  Good leadership skills. Good interpersonal skills along with strong written and oral communication skills. Excellent math skills. Excellent project management skills. Good knowledge of Personal Computer operations and related software. Ability to manage multiple activities and changing priorities. Ability to work well under pressure. Required to work safely and follow all Entergy safety policies and procedures. Ability to recognize hazards in the workplace and have the ability to mitigate the hazards. Demonstrated acceptance of a diverse and inclusive work environment and customer base. Ability to recognize opportunities for process improvement and have the ability to enact change.
