Process Engineer Process Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and sometimes PE certification. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), and Six Sigma methodologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive process improvements. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing production, ensuring safety, and achieving operational efficiency in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What is the difference between Process Engineer Process Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectProcess EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like Six Sigma often preferredBachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; certifications like Six Sigma are common
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, chemical facilities, or production linesIndustrial settings, plant floors, or process development departments
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceuticalsSimilar industries, often overlapping in chemical, manufacturing, and energy sectors

Both roles focus on optimizing manufacturing processes, ensuring safety, and improving efficiency. They often share similar qualifications and work environments, making them closely related in the industry.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer might face when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing workflows. Additionally, they must balance cost constraints with the need for efficiency and quality improvements. Coordinating across departments—such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance—can present communication challenges, requiring strong collaboration skills. Successful Process Engineers address these issues by engaging stakeholders early, clearly communicating the benefits of changes, and using data-driven approaches to demonstrate positive outcomes.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, control, and optimize industrial processes, often within manufacturing or chemical plants. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and quality by analyzing workflows and modifying equipment or systems. Process Engineers commonly collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions that enhance production. Their work is critical for ensuring that operations run smoothly, cost-effectively, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Job description

Are you ready to build America's energy future? Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company. We're revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what's possible, we're giving clean energy a whole new form!
In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a "Best Invention", MIT Technology Review as a "Top Climate Tech Company To Watch", and Fast Company as "One of the Next Big Things In Tech". We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.
Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it's a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing - might be the most exciting moment in the company's history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better.
Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you've come to the right place.
Role Description
As a Senior Process Engineer, Mechanical Assembly (Night Shift), you will serve as the senior technical authority on the production floor during overnight hours, owning line performance, leading a team of technicians, and ensuring operational continuity in a high-complexity, automated manufacturing environment. This is a critical role: night shift runs with reduced cross-functional support, requiring significant autonomy in decision-making, escalation judgment, and real-time problem solving. You will bring deep mechanical intuition, strong leadership instincts, and a data-driven mindset to drive performance outcomes, mentor your team, and serve as a key feedback loop to daytime engineering and design teams. What you learn on the floor at night shapes how we build next-generation equipment. Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do:
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on the floor during overnight hours, making autonomous decisions on escalations, downtime response, and operational continuity without day-shift support structures.
  • Mentor, and set daily priorities for a team of night shift technicians, stabilizing line cadence, building team capability, and driving accountability to production targets.
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators: specifically OEE, yield, and cycle times, to identify bottlenecks and implement data-driven improvements that carry forward to day-shift handoff.
  • Apply strong mechanical intuition to assess equipment and process issues on the fly, ensuring that proposed fixes are robust, safe, and effective, not just stop-gaps.
  • Document and communicate overnight issues clearly to day-shift engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure seamless continuity and unblock recurring production constraints.
  • Initiate tactical CI projects on the floor to eliminate waste, improve operator ergonomics, and optimize machine reliability - including work that carries across shifts.
  • Act as the voice of the shop floor by identifying human factors/usability challenges specific to night shift operation and communicating actionable design feedback to the system engineering team.

What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4-7+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing, production, or fast-paced industrial operations environment; prior night shift or off-hours leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage, prioritize tasks for, and develop a technical team - including in high-pressure situations with limited escalation support.
  • Strong familiarity with manufacturing metrics (OEE, downtime tracking) and a practical approach to root-cause analysis.
  • A solid understanding of mechanical systems and automated equipment, allowing you to independently vet technical solutions and guide the implementation of floor-level fixes without waiting for day-shift backup.
  • High autonomy and sound judgment: comfortable making real-time calls in ambiguous situations and knowing when to escalate vs. resolve independently.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional peers and present clear improvement ideas to design engineers.
  • A proactive, "get-it-done" attitude with the ability to thrive amid ambiguity and adapt quickly as we scale our technology.
Where you'll work:
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV-an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
#LI-Onsite
Humanity is a cornerstone of Form Energy's culture, and we make sure our compensation and benefits reflect that. Form Energy offers competitive salaries, stock options, and a holistic benefits package to ensure all employees have what they need to thrive while working here.
When it comes to you and your family's health, we cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees - and 80% of healthcare premiums for dependents. This starts from day one. We also offer at least 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents (up to 20 weeks for birthing parents), and generous vacation policies to give employees time to recharge when needed.
To build America's energy future, we need everyone at the table. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply to our open jobs.
