2027 Software Engineering Internship Opportunity - HII Mission Technologies
Are you a driven student who enjoys tackling challenging technical problems? Join Mission Technologies, a division of HII, and contribute to projects that help shape the future of national security at our Columbia, MD location. You will be onsite with the team five days per week during your internship.
This internship is designed for rising college juniors pursuing a bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. You'll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for a career supporting C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Combat Systems, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) systems.
Intern Levels & Pay Rates
  • Level 4: $37.13 p/hr
  • Level 3: $32.76 p/hr
  • Level 2: $28.40 p/hr

What You'll Do
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll support Minotaur-our mission management system used across manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft. Your work will directly improve how operators detect, track, and understand activity on land and at sea by enhancing sensor data processing capabilities.
You'll have opportunities to:
• Build and refine new features for operational software
• Contribute to all phases of the software development lifecycle-design, implementation, integration, and testing
• Collaborate closely with engineers and other interns on meaningful, real-world projects
Potential project areas include:
• Developing solutions to high-priority operational challenges using machine learning, AI, signal processing, and video analytics
• Designing intuitive, user-focused graphical interfaces
• Improving and automating simulation, test, and verification workflows
• Creating proof-of-concept prototypes for emerging technologies and future capabilities
What We're Looking For
To be eligible, you must be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline and qualify for these specific levels:
  • Level 4: High school diploma or equivalent & must be working towards a bachelor's degree with more than 60% of the required credits completed.
  • Level 3: High school diploma or equivalent & must be working towards a bachelor's degree with more than 40% - 60% of the required credits completed.
  • Level 2: High school diploma or equivalent & must be working towards a bachelor's degree with more than 20% - 40% of the required credits completed.

We're seeking students who have:
• Experience with software development in a Linux environment
• Proficiency in languages such as C++, Java, or JavaScript
• Strong communication skills and critical-thinking abilities
• A proactive, hardworking mindset and a strong desire to learn
