What is a process engineer intern?

Process Engineer Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in engineering teams to support the design, optimization, and improvement of manufacturing processes. They typically assist with data collection, process analysis, troubleshooting, and the implementation of new technologies or procedures under the supervision of experienced engineers. This internship provides hands-on experience, helping interns apply classroom knowledge to real-world industrial challenges, and often serves as a pathway to a full-time engineering role.

What do process engineer interns do?

As a Process Engineer Intern, you can anticipate working on a variety of hands-on projects that support process optimization, quality improvement, and efficiency initiatives within manufacturing or production environments. Typical responsibilities may include assisting with data collection and analysis, participating in process mapping, supporting root-cause investigations, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance. Interns often have opportunities to present their findings and contribute to real-world solutions, providing valuable exposure to daily operations and the chance to develop technical and teamwork skills essential for career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process engineer intern?

To thrive as a Process Engineer Intern, you need a solid grounding in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering principles, often backed by enrollment in a relevant bachelor's degree program. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or AutoCAD), data analysis tools, and safety regulations is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and attention to detail help interns excel in team environments and tackle process challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for optimizing manufacturing processes, ensuring safety, and supporting project goals.

Job description

Job Title: Process Engineering Intern - Parts

Reports to: Process Engineering Manager

Location: San Marcos, Texas

We have one goal: to manufacture quality magnets! We are looking for exceptional individuals who want to learn, build, and lay a foundation for our company for the years to come.

About this role

The Process Engineering Intern will work directly alongside experienced engineers and the Process Engineering Manager to support high-precision parts manufacturing. This hands-on internship offers direct exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies across grinding, wire EDM (wirecut), automated inspection, deburring, and surface coating operations. You will gain practical experience in data collection, process mapping, root cause analysis, and basic automation validation in an active production environment.

What We Have To Offer:

• Precision Manufacturing Operations: Gain real-world understanding of tight tolerance metal machining (wirecut EDM, precision grinding) and surface finishing methods.

• Quality Systems amp; Automation: Learn how inline automated inspection and vision feedback loops directly impact First Pass Yield (FPY) and scrap reduction. • Manufacturing Economics: Understand basic cost drivers in manufacturing, including direct product costs, cycle time efficiency, and capital asset utilization.

Diversity

At Noveon Magnetics, we believe our diversity makes us who we are, and we strive every day to build a culture where everyone feels welcome.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Process Mapping amp; Time Studies: Conducting line-side cycle time studies and workflow mapping across grinding, wirecut, deburring, coating, and inspection cells to identify bottlenecks and capacity constraints.

• Data Collection amp; SPC Analysis: Gathering and analyzing production defect, scrap, and dimensional measurement data to support process capability studies (Cp/Cpk) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) initiatives.

• Automated Inspection Support: Assisting engineers in setting up, testing, and collecting gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR amp;R) data for automated vision and metrology systems.

• Documentation amp; Standard Work: Drafting and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), visual work instructions, and tooling setup sheets for shop-floor operators.

• Root Cause Problem Solving: Participating in Kaizen events and assist engineers in investigating scrap events using 5-Why and Fishbone analyses.

We are Looking for Someone Who:

• Is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or related field (Junior or Senior standing preferred).

• Possesses basic knowledge of engineering drawings, GD amp;T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD). Familiarity with Excel for data analysis.

• Has strong mechanical curiosity, comfortable spending significant time on the shop floor, and strong verbal/written communication skills.

• Demonstrates willingness to strictly adhere to shop-floor safety guidelines and PPE protocols.

Work Environment:

• Able to move up to 50lbs.

• Possesses manual dexterity to put parts or pieces together quickly and accurately. • Can wear PPE.

• Comfortable standing for long periods of time, up to and exceeding 60 minutes. • Is capable of making repetitive movements, including, but not limited to, sitting, squatting, and walking up and down stairs.
