Job description

Who We Are

Grid.aero is a VC-backed aviation startup tackling complex challenges in both defense and commercial markets. We are focused on solving real-world problems that will shape the future of the industry. Led by aerospace veterans and supported by leading venture firms, Grid is at the forefront of developing autonomous systems that will revolutionize how goods move through the skies.

Be part of a fast-growing, high-impact startup from day one. At Grid, your work will shape critical industries, driving innovation at the intersection of national security and global commerce.

Role Overview

Grid Aero is seeking a Flight Test Engineering Intern (Contract) to assist with the flight testing of our large, fixed-wing autonomous aircraft. You will monitor cutting-edge systems from the ground control station, and assist with developmental and envelope-expansion flights that push the frontier of autonomous aviation. Working closely with engineering, operations, and safety teams, you'll turn prototypes into proven aircraft, translating flight data into insights that accelerate Grid's path to certification and deployment. You will champion a "test often, test safely" culture, driving disciplined, high-frequency testing that balances learning velocity with flight test safety best practices and process.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare Grid Aero's Lifter-Lite autonomous fixed wing aircraft for ground and flight testing, including listing/review of blocking tasks.
  • Perform and lead pre-test checklists to deploy software on the aircraft and conduct initial checks
  • Assist with ground and flight testing as an observer or ground station engineer.
  • Assist in improving and maintaining checklists for tasks you interact with.
  • Download and post-process aircraft and ground station logs after a test.
  • Assist with post-test data analysis.
  • Assist with avionics installation and sensor configuration/calibration as needed.

Who You Are

  • A motivated student or recent graduate with hands-on experience with small UAS or general aviation aircraft.
  • Have the curiosity to ask questions and drive tasks to completion based on prescribed flight test processes.
  • A collaborative teammate who communicates clearly across engineering, operations, and program management.
  • A self-starter comfortable with the ambiguity and problem-solving pace of prototype development.

Qualifications

  • Fluency with python, Google Suite, and basic Linux commands. Familiarity with C/C++ and git.
  • Current student or recent graduate in the STEM field.
  • Experience working with electrical/avionics systems and networked computers and debugging with equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Based in the CA Central Valley with the ability to work in Merced three days a week. Ability to occasionally travel to the SF Bay Area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with RC aircraft or General Aviation aircraft is a plus.
  • Prior internships or work experience with start-ups, especially in the aerospace/UAS industry.

Why Join Grid Aero:

  • Mission First: Tackle some of the most important national security issues of the day..
  • Impact: As one of our early hires, you'll have a direct and visible impact on the success of the company.
