What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer EIT, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer EIT (Engineer-in-Training), you need a bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering and a solid grasp of process design and analysis. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS or AutoCAD), data analysis tools, and safety compliance standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical solutions. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient process optimization, regulatory compliance, and successful project outcomes in industrial environments.

What is the difference between Process Engineer Eit vs Process Engineer?

AspectProcess Engineer EitProcess Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, EIT certification often requiredEngineering degree, often with Professional Engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, supervised roles in manufacturing or process industriesMid-level roles with more independence, involved in process design and optimization
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used in manufacturing, chemical, and industrial sectorsUsed across similar industries, often with more responsibility

The main difference is that a Process Engineer Eit is typically an entry-level role requiring an engineering degree and EIT certification, focusing on gaining experience. A Process Engineer usually has more experience, may hold a PE license, and takes on more complex responsibilities in process design and optimization.

What is a Process Engineer EIT?

A Process Engineer EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is an entry-level engineer who has completed the academic requirements for engineering and is working towards their Professional Engineer (PE) license. They assist in designing, analyzing, and optimizing industrial processes to improve efficiency, safety, and product quality. EITs often work under the supervision of licensed engineers and gain practical experience through hands-on projects. Their role involves process simulations, troubleshooting, data analysis, and supporting senior engineers in various industries such as manufacturing, chemical, or energy.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer EIT may face when transitioning from academic studies to an industrial environment?

A Process Engineer EIT (Engineer-in-Training) often encounters challenges such as adapting to the fast-paced decision-making and multidisciplinary collaboration typical in industrial settings. Unlike academic projects, real-world processes may require balancing efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness while working within regulatory and company constraints. Additionally, EITs may need to quickly learn new software tools and production technologies not covered extensively in university. Building strong communication skills is also essential to effectively interact with operators, senior engineers, and other departments.

Job description

Our Northeast Division is a well-respected and award-winning group where career development, training, and mentoring co-exist with diverse civil, environmental, water resources, and traffic/transportation projects in a fast-paced and rewarding work environment.

We are hiring a detail-oriented Drinking Water Treatment Process Engineer to support our water projects in the Northeast. This position can be based in any of our Massachusetts or Rhode Island offices and can work a hybrid schedule. The selected candidate will provide design and engineering support for a variety of water supply and treatment projects, including new groundwater and surface water treatment plants, pump/booster stations, and upgrades to existing facilities.  Our Process Engineers become involved in every part of the process from initial project conceptualization and planning to facility startups and optimization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare technical memoranda, reports, calculations, correspondences, designs, drawings, specifications, permit applications, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates on less complex projects or discrete tasks on more complex projects under the direct supervision of senior staff.
  • Assist the Project Manager and other senior staff in complying with assigned project schedules and budgets on less complex projects or discrete tasks on more complex projects by actively reporting on project progress and by identifying additional work outside the contractual Scope of Work.
  • Work with subconsultants under the direction of the Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • May serve as Lead Designer on less complex projects or discrete tasks on more complex projects to produce a complete and coordinated project by meeting and effectively communicating with the project team.
  • Review calculations, design assumptions, and concepts within discipline to assure quality control.
  • Provide technical input into proposals on less complex projects, or discrete tasks on more complex projects by developing scope of work, budgets, and schedules by relying on historical information or experience.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical presentations as well as participate in client meetings and/or technical presentations.
  • Work effectively and efficiently within established hourly budgets and monitor self-performance.
  • Develop expertise in pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients on technical issues by effectively communicating on a frequent and regular basis as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Lead fieldwork such as reviewing existing facility conditions, conducting laboratory/sampling work, evaluating performance of existing infrastructure, and observing construction and startup activities.
  • Assist with construction administration by tracking and reviewing submittals, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, reviewing, and compiling daily and weekly construction reports, and tracking construction schedules. Provide updates to a Senior Project Engineer and/or Project Manager.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff and provide on-the-job training and mentoring for entry-level engineers and interns.
  • Demonstrate advanced skill and proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and other associated computer-based technical software specific to the discipline.
  • Develop increasingly effective writing and presentation skills and present data that supports technical decisions and the rationale for making them.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of water treatment design experience
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), PE License or actively pursuing PE registration in a State(s) where Apex does work or ability to obtain same by reciprocity
