Process Engineer Anodizing information

What does a process engineer anodizing do?

A Process Engineer in Anodizing is responsible for developing, optimizing, and monitoring the anodizing process, which is used to create a protective or decorative oxide layer on metal parts, typically aluminum. Their role involves ensuring the process meets quality standards, troubleshooting issues, improving efficiency, and implementing safety protocols. They also collaborate with production teams to maintain equipment, analyze data, and recommend process improvements for better performance and cost-effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process engineer anodizing?

To thrive as a Process Engineer Anodizing, you need a solid background in chemical engineering or materials science, often complemented by experience in surface finishing processes and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in process control systems, statistical analysis software (like Minitab), and knowledge of industry standards (such as ISO 9001) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you optimize processes and collaborate with production teams. These skills ensure high-quality anodized products, efficient operations, and compliance with safety and quality standards.

What are some common challenges a process engineer anodizing might face when optimizing production lines, and how can they address them?

Process Engineers in anodizing often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent coating quality, managing process variables like temperature and chemical concentrations, and minimizing downtime. To address these, they typically implement rigorous process monitoring, conduct root cause analyses for defects, and collaborate closely with maintenance and quality control teams. Continuous improvement practices, such as Lean or Six Sigma, are commonly used to identify inefficiencies and standardize best practices, helping ensure reliable production while meeting safety and environmental standards.

What is the difference between Process Engineer Anodizing vs Process Engineer Plating?

AspectProcess Engineer AnodizingProcess Engineer Plating
CertificationsOften requires engineering degree, industry-specific trainingSimilar certifications, with additional plating process training
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities focused on aluminum and oxide coatingsFacilities working with metal coatings like nickel, chrome, or gold
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, electronicsJewelry, electronics, industrial equipment

Both roles involve process optimization and quality control in metal finishing. While Process Engineer Anodizing specializes in oxide layer formation on aluminum, Process Engineer Plating focuses on applying metal coatings. They share similar credentials and work environments but differ in specific processes and industry applications.

Job description

The individual will prepare design data for mechanical aircraft parts and systems using reverse engineering practices and coordinate with certification and material engineers along with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives. They ensure that design features are consistent with functional performance and safety requirements for the aircraft system installation and with standard manufacturing practices. Additionally, the engineer investigates in-service equipment failures to determine root cause and develops repairs to return parts to service. This requires close communication with the engineering and sales teams to evaluate new project feasibility.
Requirements
  • Draft sketches and models of parts
  • Conduct dimensional inspection of sample parts
  • Prepare detailed dimensional analysis reports
  • Research part function, failure modes, and operating conditions
  • Determine appropriate material and performance specifications based on material analyses and testing
  • Develop tolerance limits based on dimensional data, manufacturing capabilities, and part function
  • Perform stress, fatigue, and structural analyses to support repair and design decisions
  • Evaluate fits, tolerances, and surface treatments for machined, formed, and composite components
  • Prepare production drawings using industry standards
  • Troubleshoot failed in-service equipment to develop repair procedures for return to service
  • Provide engineering support for procurement, manufacturing, receiving, and certification of parts
  • Create technical documents using FAA guidelines and regulations
  • Work with Designated Engineering Representatives to deliver complete certification packages to the FAA

Experience and Skills
  • 5+ years of full-time relevant work experience (design, manufacturing, quality)
  • CAD/3D modeling design experience
  • Familiarity with aerospace specifications and processes
  • Experience and/or familiarity with reverse engineering a plus
  • Working knowledge of machining, forming, casting, and other manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with material properties, heat treatment, and surface finishing processes (plating, coatings, anodizing)
  • Experience with structural, stress, or fatigue analysis for mechanical components a plus
  • Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or mechanical aircraft systems is preferred
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of drafting standards
  • Proficient with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MS Office applications, Adobe Acrobat
  • Skilled in writing technical documents
  • Shop time or other hands-on experience is preferred
  • Understanding and familiarity with FAA standards is preferred
  • Detail oriented and highly organized

Education
  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

Compensation
  • Salary position commensurate with experience, bonus based on company and individual performance
  • We offer medical, dental, vision, life and other insurance options; 401k with 100% match on first 4%; full time workers get paid holidays, vacation & sick/personal leave accrued on hire date.
