Process Control Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Control Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Control Intern, you need a foundational understanding of process engineering, automation, and data analysis, typically supported by coursework in chemical, electrical, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with process control systems (such as DCS or PLCs), simulation software, and statistical analysis tools is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate with teams and accurately interpret process data. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring safe, efficient, and optimized operations in industrial environments.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Process Control Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Process Control Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects, such as assisting with the development and optimization of automated control systems, analyzing process data to identify areas for improvement, and supporting troubleshooting efforts alongside engineers. Interns often have opportunities to work with distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and industrial instrumentation. You'll collaborate closely with experienced process engineers, operations staff, and sometimes IT specialists, gaining practical experience in real-world manufacturing or industrial environments. These experiences are designed to help you build technical skills and understand the workflow of process control teams.

What are Process Control Interns?

Process Control Interns are students or early-career professionals who assist in monitoring, evaluating, and optimizing industrial processes within manufacturing or production environments. They work under the guidance of experienced engineers to collect data, troubleshoot control systems, and support process improvement projects. This role provides hands-on experience with automation technologies, control systems (such as PLCs and DCS), and process analysis. Interns often help ensure that production processes are efficient, safe, and meet quality standards while learning valuable industry skills.

Job description

DataPath is a leader in satellite and terrestrial telecommunication system design, integration, and turnkey installation services, headquartered in Duluth, GA (Northeast suburb of Atlanta, GA). DataPath specializes in designing, manufacturing, and supporting both custom and commercial- off-the-shelf mission-critical remote satellite-based communications solutions for customers worldwide in the most extreme conditions.
Summary / Objective
The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support engineering design, documentation, and configuration activities related to mechanical components and assemblies. This position is intended for a student who has completed at least one full year of college and is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
The role will focus on component-level design, 3D modeling, drawing creation, technical documentation, and support of controlled engineering data within PDM/PLM systems. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, willing to learn formal engineering documentation practices, and comfortable working in an environment where drawings, models, part data, revision control, and configuration management are important to the final product.
Job Responsibilities
The Mechanical Engineering Intern may perform some or all of the following duties under the direction of engineering staff:
  • Create, revise, and maintain 3D models and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Support development of technical documentation for controlled engineering releases.
  • Prepare or update drawings in accordance with applicable ASME Y14-series standards, including basic GD&T principles.
  • Assist with component design activities, including part modeling, fit checks, drawing updates, and design documentation.
  • Support organization and maintenance of component libraries within PDM or PLM systems.
  • Assist with part data entry, document control, and engineering release packages as required.
  • Review existing designs, drawings, and models for completeness, consistency, manufacturability, and configuration accuracy.
  • Support engineering change activities by incorporating redlines, markups, and approved design updates.
  • Use 3D modeling tools to create and revise parts, assemblies, and associated drawings.
  • Assist with basic engineering analysis using built-in CAD analysis tools, where applicable.
  • Work with engineers, designers, configuration management, manufacturing, and quality personnel to resolve documentation or design questions.
  • Search existing engineering data, PDM/PLM systems, and part libraries to identify reusable components or existing design data.
  • Support proper revision control, drawing release, part numbering, and documentation practices in accordance with company configuration management processes.
  • Gain exposure to manufacturing methods, fabrication constraints, assembly considerations, and inspection feedback.
  • Maintain flexibility as tools, methods, and project requirements evolve.

  • Completed at least one full year of college; rising sophomore or higher.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Available for full-time work, 40 hours per week, during assigned work rotations.
  • Experience with at least one 3D modeling system.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design principles.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T concepts.
  • Ability to work carefully with technical data, revision-controlled documents, and engineering records.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn formal engineering documentation, configuration control, and drawing release practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a technical team.
  • Must be able to access and work with controlled technical data as required by company policy, customer requirements, and applicable export control regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SolidWorks or Creo.
  • SolidWorks student certification or other CAD certification.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14-series drawing standards.
  • Experience creating or interpreting Y14-compliant engineering drawings.
  • Experience working with PDM or PLM systems.
  • Experience organizing or maintaining component libraries.
  • Exposure to configuration management, engineering change processes, revision control, or controlled drawing release.
  • Exposure to built-in CAD analysis tools, such as basic stress, motion, interference, or mass properties analysis.
  • Familiarity with mechanical components used in electromechanical assemblies.
  • Exposure to manufacturing, fabrication, inspection, assembly, or production support activities.
  • Familiarity with materials and fabrication methods such as machining, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, castings, coatings, plating, fasteners, or bonded assemblies.
  • Experience with student design projects, Formula SAE, robotics, aerospace clubs, lab projects, or other hands-on mechanical design activities involving CAD models, drawings, fabricated parts, or design reviews.
