Description:
The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame.
This role requires providing care to these patients utilizing the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial, and human resources within the philosophy of the institution.
Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service.
The nurse implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
It is essential to maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
Completing an initial assessment upon patient admission and developing an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards is mandatory.
The plan of care must be based on patient and family needs.
The nurse should implement the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
Modifications to the plan of care should be based on continuous evaluation.
Taking responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents is crucial.
Effective communication with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues is required.
Offering constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and conferring with colleagues to expand knowledge is expected.
Identifying one's own learning needs and taking initiative to find appropriate solutions is important.
Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is a necessity.
Department-specific job functions include preparing patients for procedures.
The nurse completes assessments, reviews health histories, starts IVs, and provides education to patients.
Monitoring and sedating patients during procedures is a key responsibility.
Caring for patients in both phase 1 and phase 2 recovery is required.
Assisting during cases that require anesthesia involvement is an essential part of the role.
Overall, the professional RN in Digestive Health defines, directs, supervises, and evaluates patient care directly and via delegation to others by using the nursing process.
