What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a probabilistic risk assessment engineer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Probabilistic Risk Assessment Engineer vs Fault Tree Analyst?
| Aspect | Probabilistic Risk Assessment Engineer | Fault Tree Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Engineering degree, certifications in risk analysis or reliability | Engineering or technical background, certifications in fault tree analysis |
| Work Environment | Industry settings like energy, aerospace, nuclear; risk modeling | Safety analysis teams, engineering departments; fault tree development |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used by utilities, aerospace, nuclear plants for risk assessment | Used in safety engineering, accident prevention, reliability studies |
Both roles focus on safety and risk analysis but differ in scope. Probabilistic Risk Assessment Engineers develop comprehensive models to quantify risks, while Fault Tree Analysts focus specifically on fault tree development to identify failure pathways. The roles often collaborate but serve distinct functions within safety and reliability teams.

Job description
Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
System Safety Engineering is a multidisciplinary organization that is chartered with the goal of assessing vehicle features and systems to ensure that they are designed to be safe and free from unreasonable risk.
Our team is looking for a technically agile and highly energetic propulsion focused technical lead to support GPI Joint Venture Alliance Partner programs.
The System Safety Engineer will work in a fast-paced and iterative work environment to ensure that system safety processes and methods applied by potential JV Alliance partners are appropriately assessed and acceptable levels of risk are identified for a given program/region. This role requires application of systems level thinking while partnering across the engineering organization to grow technical knowledge of a diverse set of propulsion related features and systems.
What You'll Do
Utilize knowledge of GM System Safety Process to analyze and provide risk assessment for GPI JV Alliance partner Propulsion (and related) Systems.
Systems in scope include but are not limited to: Conventional Engine Controls, Electrified Propulsion, Transmission, Propulsion Features (Cruise Control, Active Thermal Management), ETRS (shifter, shift master control, parking mechanisms including brake-based park or park pawl), Fuel Systems, Driveline.
Initiate discussions with JV Alliance partner to define propulsion related systems.
Understand how the systems are distributed among the JV Alliance partner and its suppliers. Identify outsourced commodities vs. systems that are integrated at the vehicle level.
Modify system safety information questionnaires provided to JV Alliance partner based on system definition and functional scope.
Analyze system and safety input received from JV partners to understand safety strategy and identify gaps in requirements.
Compile distributed system inputs into a single cohesive analysis.
Coordinate (confirm, consult) with GM Internal Domain Technical Leads to assess gaps.
Assess risk and provide recommendation for the Propulsion area.
Document analysis for legacy (i.e., treat analysis similar to safety case).
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree.
5+ years of experience in developing electrical/electrical mechanical systems and/or components
Understanding of control system hardware design, software interfaces and failure modes
Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of electromechanical mechanisms and controls systems
Understanding of serial data communications
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Candidates with one of the following engineering degrees: MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or Computer Science Engineering
In-depth knowledge of Systems Safety Engineering methods and effective scoping of the required work products
Strong understanding of vehicle integration and/or have developed other systems that closely interact with propulsion controls subsystems
Comfortable assessing and identifying acceptable levels of safety risk for a given program/region
Comfortable working in an ambiguous and changing engineering environment
In depth knowledge and real-world experience executing propulsion controls calibration or control systems production deliverables
Understanding of distributed and networked real-time control systems
Understanding of system reliability, safety, monitoring, and diagnostic technologies and processes
Proven track record of utilizing analytical tools to solve complex problems
Demonstrate the ability and willingness to challenge historical methods and technologies
Demonstrate the ability to work through complex integration issues, working with all system experts to develop a vehicle level solution for safety related issues
