How much do prn ambulance jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for prn ambulance in the United States is $26.36, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $29.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does scheduling typically work for PRN Ambulance positions, and what level of flexibility can I expect?

PRN Ambulance staff—such as EMTs or paramedics—are usually scheduled on an as-needed basis to fill shifts due to increased demand, staff shortages, or special events. This gives you significant flexibility to choose shifts that fit your availability, but it also means hours may vary from week to week. Many PRN professionals appreciate the autonomy, but it's important to be proactive in communicating your availability and responding quickly to shift opportunities. Being adaptable and reliable can also increase your chances of being offered more shifts and possibly transitioning to a full-time role if desired.

What does a PRN ambulance worker do?

A PRN ambulance worker is a healthcare professional, such as an EMT or paramedic, who works on an as-needed basis rather than on a regular, full-time schedule. PRN stands for 'pro re nata,' meaning 'as the situation arises.' These workers respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, provide medical care during transport, and assist in patient transfers. The flexible nature of PRN positions allows ambulance services to meet fluctuating staffing needs while offering workers a more adaptable schedule.

To thrive as a PRN Ambulance EMT, you need strong emergency medical knowledge, quick decision-making skills, and current EMT certification or licensure.
