What is a private personal trainer?

Private personal trainers are fitness professionals who work one-on-one with clients to design and implement customized exercise programs. They assess individual fitness levels, set achievable goals, and provide guidance, motivation, and accountability throughout the training process. Private personal trainers often tailor workouts to meet specific client needs, such as weight loss, muscle gain, rehabilitation, or overall health improvement. They may work independently, in gyms, or visit clients at home to deliver personalized coaching and support.

How does a private personal trainer typically structure client sessions and manage their schedule?

As a private personal trainer, you'll often tailor each session based on your client's fitness goals, health status, and progress. This means creating individualized workout plans, tracking results, and making real-time adjustments. Your schedule can be flexible but may require working early mornings, evenings, or weekends to accommodate clients' availability. Time management and clear communication are crucial, as you'll balance multiple clients, travel (if sessions are in-home), and administrative tasks like booking, billing, and follow-ups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private personal trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Personal Trainer, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, anatomy, and nutrition, typically backed by a recognized personal training certification such as NASM or ACE. Familiarity with fitness assessment tools, workout tracking apps, and wearable technology is essential for monitoring client progress and customizing programs. Exceptional interpersonal skills, motivation, and adaptability help trainers connect with clients, foster trust, and support diverse fitness goals. These skills and qualities ensure clients achieve results safely and effectively, building a strong reputation and sustained business.

What is the difference between Private Personal Trainer vs Group Fitness Instructor?

AspectPrivate Personal TrainerGroup Fitness Instructor

Work EnvironmentOne-on-one or small group sessions, gyms, private studiosGroup classes in gyms, community centers, studios
Employer & Industry UsageFitness centers, private clients, health clubsGyms, fitness chains, community programs

While both roles focus on fitness and require certifications like CPR/AED, a Private Personal Trainer primarily works with individual clients or small groups, providing personalized training plans. In contrast, a Group Fitness Instructor leads larger classes, focusing on group motivation and instruction. Both roles are essential in the fitness industry but differ in their training approach and work setting.

How to start a career as a private personal trainer?

To start a career as a private personal trainer, obtain a recognized certification such as NASM, ACE, or ISSA, which demonstrates your knowledge of fitness and safety. Gain experience through internships or working at gyms, develop strong communication skills, and build a client base by marketing your services locally or online. A clean background check and liability insurance are also often required to work independently or with clients privately.

About Bouldering Project

Bouldering Project is more than a climbing gym-we're a community. We're driven by a shared belief that climbing, movement, and connection should be accessible to everyone. From first-timers to seasoned climbers, families to fitness enthusiasts, and our own teammates, we create inclusive, inspiring spaces where people move, grow, and belong.

With world-class climbing, yoga and fitness offerings, and welcoming community spaces, we're proud to serve nine markets across the United States-and we're just getting started.

About the Role

Private Coaches help Members and Guests build strength, confidence, and a love of movement. As a Private Coach, you'll build your own training clientele, design personalized one-on-one and small-group programs, and support a community where everyone belongs.

What You'll Do

  • Build a personal training client base through one-on-one and small-group coaching
  • Assess each client's fitness level and design safe, effective programs aligned with their goals
  • Demonstrate exercises with proper form and provide clear, accurate instruction and cueing
  • Develop encouraging, professional relationships with Members and provide ongoing motivation and support
  • Conduct consultations with new Members and maintain regular follow-up with clients
  • Operate all equipment safely and properly, and promptly report any issues
  • Follow all Bouldering Project policies, procedures, and emergency protocols
  • Participate in trainings, team meetings, and community events

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Nationally accredited personal training certification (NSCA, ACSM, NASM, or ACE preferred)
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Ability to assess fitness levels and build programs that recognize each client's potential and limitations
  • Clear communication, mature judgment, and sound decision-making
  • Observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in Exercise Science or a related field
  • Experience building a client base in a gym or studio setting

We know not everyone will meet 100% of the qualifications. If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply.

Working at Bouldering Project

At Bouldering Project, we aim to cultivate excitement for movement, belonging, and community. We lead by example, making our spaces and offerings accessible and welcoming to all. Our core values-Inclusive, Quality-Obsessed, Local at the Core, and Growth-Oriented-are expected to be demonstrated in both leadership and daily operations. These values guide how we build community, deliver exceptional experiences, and continually evolve together.

This role may require a flexible schedule, including availability during evenings, weekends, or outside standard business hours depending on programming and business needs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • This is a part-time, hourly position. Compensation is based on experience and local market benchmarks.
  • Free Bouldering Project membership for you and a plus one
  • Discounts on gear, merchandise, and local retail partners
  • A joyful, supportive, and respectful work culture
  • Eligible to participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan

Equal Opportunity

Bouldering Project is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We encourage candidates of all backgrounds, including those with nontraditional career paths, to apply.
