What is a private label?

Private label jobs involve creating, sourcing, and selling products under a retailer’s or company’s own brand, rather than the manufacturer’s brand. Professionals in this field work on tasks such as product development, supplier negotiation, quality control, branding, and marketing. Private label specialists often collaborate with manufacturers to customize products, ensuring they meet quality standards and customer expectations. These roles are common in industries like retail, cosmetics, food, and consumer goods, where companies want to offer exclusive products and control pricing and branding.

How does a private label manager collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to ensure product quality and timely delivery?

A Private Label manager works closely with suppliers to communicate product specifications, negotiate terms, and monitor production schedules. They also coordinate with internal teams such as quality assurance, marketing, and logistics to ensure that products meet brand standards and are delivered on time. Regular meetings and clear documentation are essential to align expectations and address any challenges that arise during the product lifecycle. Effective collaboration helps maintain product quality, fosters strong supplier relationships, and ensures successful product launches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private label manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Label Manager, you need expertise in product development, supply chain management, market analysis, and a background in business or marketing. Familiarity with sourcing platforms, inventory management systems, and certifications like Six Sigma or APICS is often beneficial. Strong negotiation, project management, and communication skills help foster vendor relationships and lead cross-functional teams effectively. These skills are crucial for successfully launching profitable private label products and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.

Job description

Job Description

The Vice President of Procurement (Supply Chain) is a senior leadership role responsible for developing and executing procurement strategies across Union Supply Group's (USG) wholesale and food operations within the corrections commissary space. This leader oversees category managers and buyers in Texas and California while serving as the primary procurement liaison between USG and the broader Aramark enterprise sourcing organization.

The role is accountable for the full spectrum of purchasing activities: vendor management, cost optimization, inventory integrity, and cross-functional alignment with sales, finance, marketing, and operations. As USG expands its presence in the corrections commissary market - competing directly in the wholesale and food product segments - this leader will set departmental direction, build team capability, and champion private label growth as a key competitive differentiator.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Procurement Strategy & Sourcing

  • Develop and implement cost-effective procurement strategies across CPG food, general merchandise, and wholesale categories while maintaining inventory levels to support business growth.
  • Monitor commodity and food market trends to proactively identify supply chain risks and opportunities.
  • Execute strategic commodity plans with rigor and a capacity for both tactical execution and long-term thinking.

Vendor & Supplier Management

  • Establish and maintain relationships with key suppliers across food, CPG, and general merchandise wholesale sectors.
  • Negotiate contracts, rebate programs, and distribution exclusivity agreements with a primary focus on private label opportunities.
  • Oversee supplier performance - establishing specifications, monitoring quality and delivery, and leading corrective action and continuous improvement programs.

Private Label & Product Development

  • Lead growth in private label product development, identifying and implementing new products to compete in the corrections commissary space.
  • Manage new item timelines to ensure product launches are completed on schedule.

Inventory & Operations

  • Manage the ordering and replenishment process to meet service levels, inventory turns, cost accuracy, SKU management, and overstock objectives.
  • Achieve and maintain a 99%+ customer order fill rate while minimizing dead stock.
  • Lead departmental systems enhancements, including Microsoft Dynamics improvements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary link between USG and Aramark enterprise sourcing, ensuring alignment across shared CPG and food suppliers.
  • Lead cross-functional sales meetings to propose procurement solutions that support business acquisition and retention.
  • Partner with Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Operations on promotions, pricing, catalog reviews, and new item introductions.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop category managers, buyers, and replenishment team members.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs and drive continuous improvement in sourcing capabilities.
  • Administer HR responsibilities including hiring, performance appraisals, and employee development
Qualifications
  • 12+ years of procurement or supply chain experience in large-scale CPG organizations, ideally including food and wholesale.
  • 5+ years managing distributed teams; 2-5 years of private label experience.
  • Superior analytical, negotiating, and communication skills.
  • Advanced Excel; proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics, PowerPoint, and MS Office tools.
  • Experience in wholesale distribution, CPG, or correctional commissary strongly preferred.
Education
Bachelors preferred
