What is a private golf club?

A private golf club is an exclusive golf facility that is open only to its members and their guests. Unlike public or semi-private golf courses, private clubs require individuals to apply for membership, often involving an initiation fee and annual dues. Members typically enjoy access to the golf course, practice facilities, club events, and additional amenities such as dining, swimming, or tennis. Private golf clubs often focus on creating a close-knit community and may offer enhanced services and a higher standard of course maintenance.

What are the typical responsibilities and team dynamics for staff working at a private golf club?

Staff members at a private golf club commonly interact with both club members and their colleagues to deliver a high standard of service. Day-to-day duties may include preparing and maintaining facilities, organizing events, assisting with member requests, and ensuring the smooth operation of the clubhouse or golf course. Teamwork is essential, as staff often coordinate with hospitality, groundskeeping, and pro shop teams. Collaboration and clear communication are key, as private clubs emphasize personalized service and member satisfaction, creating a supportive but fast-paced work environment. Advancement opportunities often exist for those who show initiative, leadership, and strong customer service skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private golf club manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Golf Club Manager, you need expertise in hospitality management, budgeting, and facility operations, usually supported by a degree in hospitality or business and relevant experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, club management software, and knowledge of food and beverage regulations are typical technical requirements. Exceptional interpersonal skills, leadership, and attention to detail help foster a welcoming environment and manage staff effectively. These abilities are crucial for ensuring member satisfaction, operational efficiency, and the overall success of the club.

This opportunity is designed for an experienced merchandiser who loves golf and understands what it takes to be a part of an incredible golf team at a high-end private golf club. The ideal candidates bring strong organizational skills, a keen eye for merchandising, and a passion for hospitality and retail in a luxury setting.

At Brook Hollow, you will be part of:
  • A historic A.W. Tillinghast-designed golf course, recently restored by Keith Foster
  • One of Texasโ€™ most respected private club memberships
  • A current Top 100 Platinum Clubs of America Award recipient
  • A retail operation that supports $1.7 million in golf shop sales
  • A full tournament and member-event calendar
  • A double bay indoor teaching center and fitting operation with industry best equipment
  • A team culture built on accountability, warm service, fun, and professional growth
  • A collaborative leadership environment that values retail strategy, adaptive buying plans, and high-touch member relationships
  • A collaborative golf operation that functions as one team, supporting a Member Service Center offering premium golf and luxury lifestyle merchandise year-round.
POSITION OVERVIEW

The Head Golf Shop Merchandiser & Buyer at Brook Hollow Golf Club will lead the daily and seasonal execution of the Golf Shop retail program. This position is responsible for golf merchandise, buying plans, inventory management, vendor partnerships, visual merchandising, member retail service, and retail training within the Golf Department.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Buying & Vendor Strategy
  • Develop and execute seasonal and annual buying plans for golf apparel, lifestyle apparel, accessories, shoes, gifts, tournament merchandise, and club-branded items.
  • Collaborate and review plans alongside the Head Golf Professional to establish forecasted retail goals, purchasing strategy, vendor priorities, open-to-buy discipline, and product flow throughout the year.
  • Build and maintain strong vendor relationships while communicating regularly regarding product availability, deliveries, credits, returns, future buys, and promotional opportunities.
  • Use retail data, member feedback, historical sales, sell-through, margin, inventory turns, and category performance to guide future purchasing decisions.
  • Stay current with luxury golf, lifestyle, and private-club retail trends while balancing Brook Hollowโ€™s traditions, brand standards, and member preferences.
Inventory & Financial Discipline
  • Manage inventory accuracy, receiving, tagging, transfers, back stock, storage areas, special orders, member charges, and follow-through on product arrival.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of inventory on order, on display, and in storage to reduce shrink, prevent missed sales, and improve turnover.
  • Direct quarterly inventory audits and counts to support healthy inventory practices and financial accountability.
  • Review vendor invoices and statements to ensure timely payment, accurate receiving, and avoidance of account holds or billing discrepancies.
  • Maintain organized retail storage spaces and ensure new merchandise is received, tagged, displayed, or stored in a timely and accurate manner.
Visual Merchandising & Member Experience
  • Maintain a first-class member shopping environment built around personal service, strong product knowledge, thoughtful presentation, and a culture of โ€œpersonal shoppersโ€ for members and guests.
  • Design, maintain, and rotate unique, visually attractive merchandise displays that reflect Brook Hollowโ€™s brand, seasonality, major events, and member preferences.
  • Support and maintain the Clubโ€™s logo and brand integrity as designated by Club guidelines for merchandise and retail presentation.
  • Be present on the shop floor during key member traffic periods, club events, holidays, and retail activations.
  • Stay engaged with all demographics of members to support their buying needs and feedback.
Events, Corporate Orders & Marketing
  • Oversee tournament and event merchandise programs, including member-guest merchandise, ladiesโ€™ events, menโ€™s events, junior programming, holiday gifting, and club-branded opportunities.
  • Manage corporate gifting and large member order opportunities, including vendor sourcing, order tracking, delivery timelines, personalization, and billing accuracy.
  • Support digital communication and marketing of featured products, seasonal arrivals, tournament merchandise, holiday gifts, corporate offerings, and special shop events.
  • Assist in developing retail promotions, private shopping opportunities, vendor activations, trunk shows, and member-focused retail experiences.
  • Contribute to Brook Hollowโ€™s continued pursuit of retail excellence, including AGM Platinum Award submissions, visual merchandising standards, and measurable performance improvement.
Team Training & Golf Operation Support
  • Train golf shop staff and golf professionals on product knowledge, member selling techniques, fit, fabric, brand stories, special orders, and retail service expectations.
  • Work collaboratively with the golf professional team to support the day-to-day shop services, tee sheet, member events, tournament execution, and the overall member experience.
  • Provide leadership in maintaining consistent retail standards across the Golf Shop, storage areas, displays, and member-facing service points.
  • Communicate clearly with golf professionals, outside service staff, accounting, vendors, and club leadership to ensure accurate follow-through and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain schedule flexibility where possible based on business needs, seasonal demand, key member events, and peak retail periods.
BROOK HOLLOW RETAIL IDENTITY AND CULTURE

Our philosophy centers on creating a customized and personal shopping experience across luxury, lifestyle, and performance golf merchandise. The Golf Shop should feel curated, approachable, and easy for members to use. The selected candidate will be expected to understand member preferences, anticipate buying trends, maintain polished displays, and ensure every product category supports the broader golf experience.

The Head Golf Shop Merchandiser & Buyer will be expected to maintain and support the Clubโ€™s branding and logo guidelines while bringing fresh ideas and creativity to the merchandise offering. Brook Hollow is looking for a leader who can balance premium brands, classic club style, modern lifestyle trends, strong financial discipline, and the practical realities of serving a high-volume private-club golf shop.

Equally important, the successful candidate must be a highly engaging person who brings warmth, joy, approachability, and a natural ability to connect with members and staff. Brook Hollow is seeking someone with strong social awareness, high emotional intelligence, and the sales acumen to build trust, create enthusiasm, and make members feel personally known and well cared for. This role requires a culture-forward team player who enjoys collaboration, communicates with positivity, and helps strengthen the overall energy and service culture of the Golf Operation.

This position will also play an important role in Brook Hollowโ€™s continued pursuit of retail excellence, including future AGM Platinum Award submissions, golf shop accolades, visual merchandising standards, local and national networking, member marketing, and measurable performance improvement.
