Description of Job This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Maintenance Supervisor at a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility in Canon City. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing inmate workers in equipment maintenance and repair skills and procedures; and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant maintenance of commercial kitchen and laundry equipment.
This position promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment. Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches; monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments, Operational Memorandum and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Operations - position ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective operations of commercial kitchen and laundry equipment; and also assists with other general building and grounds construction, repair or maintenance throughout the facility. Kitchen and Laundry Equipment - position ensures the safe, secure, efficient, compliant and cost effective completion of assigned tasks and projects by performing 'hands on' instructional work alongside inmate workers; position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of commercial kitchen and laundry equipment; this includes refrigerated appliances and walk in coolers and freezers, commercial grade washers and dryers, and other mechanical equipment throughout the facility. Provides instruction and training to inmates in the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery to ensure safe, effective, and efficient completion of projects.
Position coordinates with other projects, supervisors and managers in order to facilitate most economical use of resources and assists other physical plant staff with duties as assigned. With prior purchase approval and in accordance with fiscal rules and policies, position maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials for urgent and daily needs; monitors inventory levels and implements procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss. Supervision - provides supervision of assigned inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values.
Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures; promotes safe work practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior. Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs; tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances; inspects work and performs inmate evaluations; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry. Position may be required to supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors.
This position is subject to the following: Facility call back, working additional hours or shifts to maintain security and operations, working outside during inclement weather and working in close proximity to industrial equipment. OR Applicant may meet the four year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows: A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with the following types of employment for a total of four (4) years: 1. General maintenance employment, performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on residential, commercial, or industrial buildings.
2. Grounds maintenance employment, performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on residential, commercial, or industrial grounds. 3.
Correctional experience - Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior, and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry. Substitution: A degree from an accredited non-correspondent college, university, vocational or trade school in equipment repair (or similar field) that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to the competencies learned through the required experience may substitute on a year for year basis, for the required experience.

Required Competencies: Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability Sound judgment and decision-making skills Proficiency in comprehensive maintenance on a variety of equipment that is safe and reliable Ability to diagnose equipment problems and perform repairs efficiently and effectively Ability to conduct relevant research, create material and labor list with cost estimate and implement repairs/maintenance/projects, from conception to implementation, while coordinating with other trades and shops to utilize resources efficiently Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and written instructions, monitoring project progress and compliance in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork Willingness and ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, medical emergencies and escapes) Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations. Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift.
