The print industry encompasses a wide array of job types and titles, depending on which aspect of a printed product you work on. In the case of books, layout artists and graphic designers start early in the process to define the presentation of a book; books are, after all, mostly judged by the cover. Later in the process, production is overseen by printers, binders, production workers, and machine technicians. Once the materials have come off the press, they are packed and shipped. The printing industry also supports a bevy of marketing, administrative, and legal employees.
| Aspect | Printing | Graphic Designer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; technical training | Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field |
| Work Environment | Print shops, manufacturing facilities | Design studios, advertising agencies |
| Industry Usage | Production of printed materials | Creating visual concepts and layouts |
Printing focuses on the production of physical printed materials, requiring technical skills and equipment operation. Graphic designers create visual content and layouts, often working digitally before printing. While printing involves the actual production process, graphic design emphasizes the creative and conceptual aspects. Both roles are essential in the print industry but serve different functions.
