What is a printing prepress operator?

Printing Prepress Operators are skilled professionals who prepare digital files and materials for printing. They handle tasks such as formatting artwork, adjusting colors, setting up layouts, and ensuring that all files are print-ready before they go to press. Their work is essential in detecting and correcting any errors that could affect print quality, ensuring the final product meets client and industry standards. Prepress operators use specialized software and equipment to bridge the gap between the design and printing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a printing prepress operator?

To thrive as a Printing Prepress Operator, strong attention to detail, color management expertise, and knowledge of prepress processes are essential, often supported by a certificate or associate degree in graphic communications or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and familiarity with digital workflow systems are typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, time management, and communication abilities help operators efficiently handle client specifications and collaborate with design and production teams. These skills ensure accurate print preparation, minimize costly errors, and support seamless production workflows.

Job description

Do you look at a manual production step and immediately start thinking about how to make it run itself?

Wallace Graphics is one of the largest and fastest-growing commercial print companies headquartered in Georgia – and we're looking for a Prepress & Data Manager to own the work that happens before anything hits a press.

Our services span commercial print, direct mail, wide format print and installation, digital storefront implementation and management, branded apparel and merchandising with a team full of print experts ready to solve the most complex challenges. We offer full-service solutions for our clients using the latest technology with the very best equipment.

Our continued growth is a testament to our talented workforce and passionate leadership. We operate in a team-oriented environment built on strong values and a genuine priority on lasting relationships – with our clients and our people. We believe that engaging, training, and rewarding our employees are the secret ingredients to our success. We invest in the growth of our people, from cross-training and lean production learning to management development.

The Ideal Candidate:

This role reports to our Chief Operating Officer and brings Prepress, Data and Composition together under one leader. You'll own file preparation and preflight, variable data processing, and document composition end to end.

The reason this seat exists is automation. We run a high volume of recurring, template-driven work that is still touched by hand more often than it should be. We want someone who treats every repeat job as a candidate for a script, a hot folder, or a workflow rule – and who can build the case for it, build the thing, and get the team using it.

What You'll Bring:

  • A demonstrated track record automating production work – scripting, workflow automation, templating, or imposition and preflight rules that removed manual steps and stuck.
  • Hands-on prepress depth: preflight, color management, imposition, proofing, and the judgment to know when a file is genuinely ready.
  • Real experience with variable data and composition – building, testing, and proofing data-driven jobs, and reading a data file critically before it reaches production.
  • Leadership experience, or the clear readiness for it: you can set standards, train technicians, and hold a cross-functional group to a schedule.
  • The ability to work across departments – with scheduling, mailing, client services and our systems development team – because most automation wins live at a handoff.
  • Experience with Prinect, BCC Architect, and VPS-based workflows is a plus.
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree and 5+ years in prepress, premedia, or data/composition in a commercial print environment, including lead or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Benefits include (in addition to a competitive salary):

  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • Health savings account access
  • Group life insurance
  • 401k retirement plan plus employer match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Recognition rewards and bonuses
  • Regular team building events
