What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a printing ink technician?

To thrive as a Printing Ink Technician, you need a solid understanding of ink formulation, color theory, and printing processes, usually supported by technical training or vocational certification. Familiarity with color matching systems, spectrophotometers, and quality control software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help technicians manage production issues and collaborate with press operators. These skills are crucial for ensuring consistent print quality, minimizing waste, and meeting client specifications in a fast-paced production environment.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by printing ink technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Printing Ink Technicians often encounter challenges such as achieving color consistency across different print runs, managing ink viscosity for various substrates, and troubleshooting issues like smudging or uneven coverage. These challenges can be mitigated by maintaining precise calibration of mixing equipment, closely monitoring environmental conditions in the print shop, and collaborating with press operators to adjust settings as needed. Staying updated with the latest ink formulations and adhering to quality control protocols also greatly contributes to successful outcomes.

Job description

Who we are

We are a small & successful screen-printing and custom apparel company based in Ontario that have been operating for 10+ years. With a tight-knit team of 21 people split between the office and the production floor/factory, we move fast, take pride in our work, and enjoy collaborating as a team. We handle everything from custom t-shirts to large corporate orders, and we have built a solid reputation for quality and reliability.

We are growing, and we need another great person to help keep things running smoothly.

The role

This is a front-line role that sits right at the intersection of customer care and production coordination. You will be the first voice customers hear when they call, the person who keeps orders on track, and a key link between our customers and the production floor. If you like variety, enjoy talking to people, and have a knack for staying organized when things get busy, this could be a great fit for you.

What you will be doing

  • Answering phones and responding to customer inquiries with a friendly, helpful attitude
  • Handling customer issues and complaints calmly and professionally, and following up to make sure things get resolved
  • Entering and tracking orders in our shop management software
  • Coordinating between customers and the production team to make sure timelines, artwork approvals, and job specs are clear
  • Flagging any production issues or delays early so customers are never left wondering
  • Keeping records accurate and up to date
  • Supporting the team with general office tasks as needed
  • Applying any knowledge of screen printing, embroidery, or graphic design where it is useful (a bonus, not a requirement)

What we are looking for

  • A strong communicator good with people & teams
  • Solid skills in email communications, Microsoft word & excel
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Can work calmly under pressure and timelines
  • Comfortable picking up new software quickly

Bonus Skills

  • Experience in a production, print, or trades environment is an asset
  • Familiarity with screen printing, graphics, or apparel decoration (Photoshop & Illustrator)

What we offer

  • Competitive hourly pay
  • Benefits package that kicks in after 3 months
  • A supportive environment & team to collaborate and grow with
  • A stable, full-time role with regular hours
  • On-the-job training and support as you get up to speed

How to apply

Send your resume. We would love to take a look and see how your skills, experience and capabilities align. You do not need a formal cover letter.

We look forward to reviewing your application.
