Print Design focuses specifically on creating visual content for physical media like brochures, posters, and packaging. While both roles require similar skills and education, Print Design is specialized for tangible outputs, whereas Graphic Design covers a wider range of visual communication.

What is print design?

Print design is a branch of graphic design focused on creating visual materials that are printed on physical surfaces, such as posters, brochures, magazines, packaging, and business cards. Unlike digital design, print design must consider factors like paper size, color accuracy, resolution, and bleed areas to ensure the final product looks as intended when produced. Print designers work with layout, typography, imagery, and branding to communicate messages effectively in a tangible format. Their work often involves preparing files for professional printing and collaborating with printers to achieve the desired result.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Print Design and how can they be addressed?

Print Designers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, last-minute client changes, and ensuring color accuracy between digital proofs and final printed materials. Effective communication with clients and print vendors is crucial to manage expectations and technical requirements. Familiarity with pre-press processes and maintaining organized, print-ready files can help prevent costly errors or delays. Collaborating closely with marketing, copywriting, and production teams also ensures a smooth workflow and high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Print Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Print Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and experience with print production processes, usually supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and familiarity with prepress and file preparation standards are essential. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help you effectively interpret client briefs and collaborate with production teams. These skills ensure visually compelling, technically accurate designs that meet client needs and print specifications.

Job description

Graphic Designer – In-House Agency

Location: Pittsburg, KS | Full-Time, In-Person

Jake’s Fireworks is looking for a detail-driven, high-energy Print & Production Graphic Designer who loves seeing their work come to life in the real world. This isn’t a typical desk-only design job — it’s hands-on, fast-paced, and full of variety. You’ll design and prepare files for signage, tradeshow displays, fireworks product labels, brochures, and other print materials, while also supporting a wide range of creative projects across print, digital, retail, and events.
If you thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy managing multiple projects, and take pride in clean, production-ready files, this role is for you.
Why Jake’s Fireworks?
At Jake’s, you’ll work as part of an in-house creative agency supporting our iconic fireworks brands — plus 30+ additional businesses across multiple industries. That means your designs won’t sit in a folder; they’ll show up in stores, at events, on shelves, and across marketing channels nationwide. You’ll gain exposure to large-format print, packaging, retail environments, and high-impact promotional materials.
We’re seeking a designer who values both strong creative concepts and flawless execution, and who enjoys working closely with a tight-knit marketing team that values initiative, collaboration, and results.
What You’ll Do
Graphic Design
  • Create bold, eye-catching designs for print materials, packaging, signage, brochures, labels, displays, and social media.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to develop campaigns that are visually strong and production-ready.
  • Maintain brand consistency and high design standards across all projects.
Print & Production
Prepare accurate, press-ready files for a wide range of outputs including:
  • Retail and outdoor signage
  • Tradeshow and event displays
  • Fireworks product labels and packaging
  • Brochures, flyers, and other marketing collateral
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external print vendors to ensure specs, timelines, and quality standards are met.
  • Manage print schedules, revisions, and approvals from concept through final production.
  • Digital Design
  • Design assets for websites, email campaigns, and digital advertising.
  • Adapt print designs for digital use when needed.
  • Stay current on design and production best practices.
Photography & Creative Support
  • Capture and edit photos of products, events, and displays for marketing use.
  • Assist with creative content development, including concepts and occasional copy support.
  • Marketing & Event Support
  • Jump in wherever creativity is needed — photoshoots, store setups, displays, and special events.
  • Occasionally travel to support retail locations and event activations.
What You Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating print, production, and layout expertise, along with creative versatility.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Solid understanding of print production, file setup, color, and specifications.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with photography, copywriting, or large-format print production is a plus.
