What is a principal software engineer in test?

A Principal Software Engineer In Test is a senior-level professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex testing strategies and frameworks for software applications. They lead test architecture, mentor testing teams, and ensure high standards of quality and reliability in software releases. This role often collaborates closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to integrate automated testing into the software development lifecycle. Principal Software Engineers In Test also drive innovation in test automation tools, processes, and best practices. Their expertise is critical in maintaining scalable, maintainable, and efficient testing solutions in large-scale environments.

How does a principal software engineer in test typically influence the overall quality strategy within a development team?

A Principal Software Engineer In Test plays a critical leadership role in shaping the quality strategy by designing robust testing frameworks, mentoring junior team members, and collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. They often set best practices for automated and manual testing, ensure test coverage aligns with business goals, and drive the adoption of new tools or processes to improve efficiency. Their influence extends beyond their own tasks, as they are usually involved in architectural decisions and advocate for a quality-first mindset across the team and organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a principal software engineer in test, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Principal Software Engineer In Test, you need deep expertise in software testing methodologies, programming (such as Java, Python, or C#), and a strong background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation frameworks (like Selenium or Cypress), CI/CD tools, and industry certifications such as ISTQB are highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software products while setting strategic direction and mentoring teams.

Job description

Opiniion is a resident experience tool that partners with property management to create better living experiences for their residents. Our platform has helped thousands of property managers collect and act on real-time feedback, improve resident experiences, and enhance their online reputation. Opiniion is committed to exceptional service and innovation, earning recognition as one of Americaโ€™s fastest-growing private companies. Driven by a forward-thinking team, weโ€™re shaping the future of resident engagement. Our continued growth and commitment to innovation make this an exciting time to be part of our team!

Hybrid: Monday to Wednesday in office

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Opiniion is a SaaS, AI first company reshaping how businesses understand and act on customer feedback. We're looking for a Senior SDET to own test strategy and automation across our platform. This is an engineering role, not a manual testing role: you'll write production quality code to build and maintain the frameworks that keep our releases fast and reliable.

We're building a new platform alongside our current one. On the new platform, you'll help the architects design it and help deliver it, then fully own quality and test ownership once it's live. On the current platform, you already fully own test automation and quality today.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automation frameworks across UI, API, and integration layers
  • Own the quality gates and test criteria that determine pass/fail within the CI/CD pipeline built and maintained by DevOps
  • Write and maintain automated test suites in step with feature development, not behind it
  • On the new platform, partner with the Staff Software Architect and Staff Data Architect during design and build, then take full ownership of test strategy and quality once it ships
  • On the current platform, fully own test automation, quality gates, and regression coverage
  • Participate in code reviews and design discussions, and represent quality considerations in architecture decisions
  • Diagnose flaky tests, performance bottlenecks, and reliability issues, then fix root causes, not symptoms
  • Build and maintain performance and load testing capability for critical workflows
  • Use AI assisted tooling to accelerate test generation, maintenance, and coverage analysis
  • Contribute to testing strategy for AI powered features, including validating LLM based and agentic functionality
  • Mentor engineers on test automation practices and testable code design

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • 7+ years of experience in software development or test automation, with demonstrated engineering depth, not just tool usage
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language commonly used for test automation (Python, Java, TypeScript, or similar)
  • Hands on experience with modern automation frameworks (Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or similar)
  • Experience with API test automation and tools like REST Assured, Postman, or similar
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into deployment workflows
  • Experience with BDD/TDD approaches and frameworks (Cucumber, Gherkin, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of performance and load testing tools (JMeter, k6, or similar)
  • Understanding of design patterns, data structures, and layered architecture as applied to test systems
  • Experience testing distributed systems, microservices, or integration points across services
  • Familiarity with AI assisted testing tools and awareness of emerging practices around testing LLM based and agentic features
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain quality risk and tradeoffs to engineering and product stakeholders
  • A strong bias for action and a mindset of continuous improvement

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience with contract testing (Pact or similar) across service boundaries
  • Experience with observability and shift-right testing practices (monitoring production quality with real user data)
  • Background in high-growth SaaS environments or post-acquisition test suite consolidation
  • Familiarity with SOC 2 or similar compliance frameworks
  • Experience validating RAG pipelines or detecting AI hallucinations in production systems
OPINIIONโ€™S CULTURE:

At Opiniion, we take our work seriously, but we donโ€™t take ourselves too seriously! We work hard together, and we have a lot of fun doing it. We are a team that believes in real autonomy: you own your area, solve problems, and move fast enough to actually see the change you make. The people here are invested in each other just as much as theyโ€™re invested in the work, and that combination is what makes this place different. We believe in collaboration, innovation, and building a team that truly caresโ€”about our clients, their residents, and each other.

BENEFITS SNAPSHOT:
  • Comprehensive healthcare plans, encompassing medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with group life coverage. Opiniion covers 40-90% of the premium cost for employees and all dependents.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 100% corporate match on the first 1% and 50% match on the next 5%.
  • Pre-tax Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
  • Paid Parental Leave for all new parents (including adoption or foster care).
  • 10 Paid Holidays annually.
  • Monthly Wellness Reimbursement benefit.

*Note that the above benefits are available only to full-time employees of Opiniion*

Opiniion is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth and pregnancy-related conditions), gender identity or expression (including transgender status), sexual orientation, marital status, military service and veteran status, physical or mental disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local laws and ordinances.
