Job description

Under the supervision of the Senior Fire Protection Engineer, the Fire Protection Engineer performs the following duties:
  • Supervise the Fire Protection Associates (FPEA) and administrative staff engaged in Fire and Life Safety Plan review, Fire Code review, and Fire Project Permit Issuance.
  • Coordinates and maintains contact with the Department of Building and Safety and Planning Department on Fire and Life Safety matters. Assists designers and engineers of major project developments by participating in and overseeing the Parallel Design-Permitting Program which allows the design process to coincide with the permitting process.
  • Reviews and approves construction plans for major and complex projects of high-risk occupancies including, but not limited to, high-rise structures, institutions, educational facilities, large multi-use occupancies, and hazardous occupancies. Ensures construction plans comply with Los Angeles Fire Code, California Building Codes, State Fire Marshal Regulations, and all applicable standards.
  • Provide training to FPEA's and Inspectors on the Los Angeles Fire Code, California Building Code, California Fire Marshal Regulations, National Fire Prevention Association standards, and LA City Fire Department regulations and policies.
  • Represents the Fire Department at engineering conferences, committee meetings, and meetings of legislative bodies on fire protection matters for the development of Building and Fire Codes.

Requirements
1. Two years of full-time paid professional experience at the level of Fire Protection Engineering Associate II AND
2. Registration as a Professional Engineer with the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists
