How much do primate research jobs pay per year?
What is primate research?
A Primate Research job involves studying primates, such as monkeys and apes, to understand their behavior, biology, cognition, and health. Researchers may work in laboratories, zoos, or natural habitats, conducting observations and experiments to gather data. This field contributes to conservation efforts, medical advancements, and a deeper understanding of human evolution. Positions may require backgrounds in biology, psychology, or veterinary sciences, with hands-on experience in animal care and research methodologies. Ethical considerations and humane treatment of animals are key aspects of this work.
What does a typical day look like for someone working in primate research?
A typical day in Primate Research can vary depending on whether your focus is on laboratory or fieldwork. You may spend time observing and recording primate behavior, collecting biological samples, analyzing data, or maintaining research records and equipment. Collaboration with fellow researchers, veterinarians, and students is common, as is participation in team meetings to discuss findings. You may also be responsible for ensuring compliance with ethical standards and regulatory guidelines. This dynamic mix of tasks helps keep the work engaging and contributes directly to advancing our knowledge of primate biology and behavior.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in primate research, and why are they important?
Success in Primate Research requires a background in biology, anthropology, or a related field, with experience in scientific research and data analysis. Familiarity with laboratory protocols, statistical software (such as R or SPSS), and field equipment is often required, and some positions may prefer candidates with animal care certifications. Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well both independently and in collaborative research teams are highly valued. These skills ensure accurate data collection, ethical animal handling, and effective contributions to scientific understanding and publications.

Job description
The BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF EMORY UNIVERSITY in Atlanta, GA (https://biology.emory.edu/) is a broadly based biology department within Emory's College of Arts and Sciences. We seek candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of neuroscience.
Competitive nine-month salary will be determined based on the quality of application materials and the current salary distribution within the biology department.
Emory's beautiful campus offers a highly collaborative and well-resourced research environment in a compact footprint. The Emory neuroscience community includes >100 labs across Emory College, the School of Medicine, Emory National Primate Research Center, and the Rollins School of Public Health, which benefit from several cutting-edge research core facilities (https://www.cores.emory.edu/eicf/). The greater Atlanta neuroscience community - including Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and other institutions - provides further research, teaching, and mentorship opportunities. Finally, the metro Atlanta area provides opportunities for science outreach and education beyond the university.
The successful applicant will train and mentor PhD or MD/PhD students through the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences (http://biomed.emory.edu/) and/or the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program (https://bme.gatech.edu/). The applicant will also contribute to the department's undergraduate teaching mission and create research opportunities for undergraduate students. You can learn more about the history and values of the Emory Biology Department here: https://biology.emory.edu/about/abc/index.html. Emory is an equal opportunity employer, and qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by state or federal law.
Review of applications will begin on Monday November 24, 2025 and applications received up to 30 days after review begins will be given full consideration.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will use experimental approaches to examine any aspect of neural function, including molecular, cellular, systems, or developmental neuroscience, and will ideally integrate computational approaches into their research as well. We encourage outstanding candidates to apply, even if their most recent findings are still in the form of preprints, and we hope to recruit a colleague who will complement areas of existing research strengths in the department. Successful applicants will have a PhD, post-doctoral research experience, a record of productivity, and a commitment to evidence-based undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit:
1) A cover letter summarizing the candidate's goals for research, teaching, and mentorship
2) A CV
3) A description of prior research and plan for developing an independent, externally funded research program
4) A statement of experience and interests in teaching, including how the candidate will contribute to the Biology department's undergraduate teaching program
5) A statement of experience and interests in mentorship, service, and/or community outreach.
Items 3-5 should not exceed 5000 total words combined (~6 pages). Applicants should arrange to have three confidential letters of recommendation submitted to Interfolio on their behalf.
