What is a pressure pumping?

A Pressure Pumping job involves operating high-pressure pumps to inject fluids, such as water, chemicals, or cement, into wells for oil and gas extraction. Workers in this field perform hydraulic fracturing (fracking), acidizing, and other well-stimulation techniques to enhance production. The job requires handling heavy equipment, monitoring pressure levels, and ensuring safety procedures are followed. It often involves working in remote locations under physically demanding conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in pressure pumping?

To thrive in Pressure Pumping, candidates need a solid understanding of hydraulic fracturing, mechanical operations, and equipment maintenance, typically with a high school diploma or technical training in oilfield services. Familiarity with high-pressure pumps, blending units, control panels, and safety certifications such as HAZWOPER or Well Control are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help personnel adapt to evolving project needs and safely collaborate in remote environments. These capabilities are critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and successful pressure pumping operations in demanding field settings.

What are the typical work hours and conditions for a pressure pumping position?

Pressure Pumping roles often require working long shifts, including nights, weekends, and being on-call, depending on the needs of the drilling or completion schedule. Employees frequently work outdoors in varying weather conditions and may be assigned to remote sites for extended periods, sometimes following rotational schedules such as 14 days on, 7 days off. Safety is always a top priority due to the high-pressure equipment and potentially hazardous materials involved. Teamwork is essential, as crews coordinate closely to ensure jobs are executed efficiently and within strict safety guidelines.

Job description

High Pressure Hydraulics System EngineerPosition Summary

An experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in hydraulic systems and mechanical equipment design, and high-pressure equipment. This is a hands‑on role for an engineer who enjoys designing, building, testing, and improving complex industrial machinery.

The successful candidate will divide their time between engineering design and hands‑on work in the shop, spending approximately 50% of their time supporting equipment assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and design validation. This position requires close collaboration with engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel and a willingness to contribute mechanical design expertise on projects led by others.

Experience with high-temperature, high-pressure press systems used in industrial diamond manufacturing or similar extreme-pressure applications is highly desirable.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop hydraulic and mechanical systems for industrial equipment.
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using PTC Creo and AutoCAD.
  • Perform mechanical analysis, including component sizing, material selection, stress considerations, and design validation.
  • Develop and evaluate prototypes, perform testing, troubleshoot issues, and implement design improvements.
  • Provide mechanical design expertise and technical input to support projects led by other engineers.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering to solve complex technical problems.
  • Document engineering designs, revisions, and test results.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
Desired Attributes
  • Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Hands‑on, practical mindset with a passion for solving real‑world engineering challenges.
  • Self‑motivated, organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience designing, developing, and troubleshooting hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency with PTC Creo and AutoCAD.
  • Strong working knowledge of hydraulic components, circuits, valves, pumps, cylinders, and system diagnostics.
  • Solid understanding of material properties, mechanical strength, stress analysis, and engineering design principles.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with high-temperature, high-pressure press systems, particularly those used in industrial diamond or similar manufacturing processes.
  • Project management experience, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating engineering projects.
  • Experience with DFM, FEA and other engineering tools.
