Job description

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence.

Each year, thousands of people in the U.S. die from gun violence. We can change that. No organization has a more comprehensive and systematic approach to ending America’s gun violence epidemic. They say it can't be done. But we know Americans can do anything; they can even end this epidemic of gun violence. For we are more powerful than any problem when we work as one. Now is the time to unite people, from coast to coast, young and old, liberal and conservative, fed up and fired up, and free our country from what is killing us. It's in our hands.

Job Summary:

The Press Secretary will own Brady's day-to-day press media relations outreach and strategy. Candidates must have experience with political and advocacy organizations and a proven track record of earning diverse national, state, and local media coverage. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment with frequent rapid response situations. Qualified candidates will bring strong media relationships, excellent writing/editing skills, and documented success in translating complex issues into compelling messaging and proactive media strategies.

This position reports to the Vice President of Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute proactive media strategies tied to organizational priorities and campaign goals

  • Pitch and secure media opportunities for the Brady President and other organizational spokespeople

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for incoming national media inquiries

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with national, state, and local reporters, editors, producers, and bookers across print, broadcast, digital, and podcast media

  • Counsel senior leaders and spokespeople, especially the Brady President, on media strategy and messaging

  • Coordinate and direct media opportunities, including in-studio interviews, pressers, and public events

  • Draft talking points, remarks, press releases, media advisories, letters to the editor, scripting, and op-eds

  • Help identify and lead rapid response to shootings and breaking news events

  • Partner closely with the Legal, Programs, and Policy teams to develop earned media strategies that elevate their work and advance organizational priorities

  • Collaborate across the Communications team on integrated campaigns, storytelling, and messaging initiatives that advance Brady’s priorities

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on Brady’s media coverage and identify opportunities for continued engagement

  • Lead media training sessions for Brady staff and organizational spokespeople as needed

  • Support and coordinate with vendors and consultants as needed

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or political communications

  • Superior written and oral communications

  • Experience or aptitude for writing swiftly and concisely on tight deadlines

  • Strong record of earned media across major outlets

  • Ability to respond to news and media outside of work hours

  • Strong existing media contacts, including television bookers, editorial boards, and national journalists across beats

  • Familiarity with legislative and judicial processes

  • Experience using Muck Rack or similar media monitoring and media relations platforms

Valued Skills:

  • Familiarity with gun violence issues and policy

  • Experience working with grassroots advocates and organizers

  • Spanish language fluency preferred

  • Experience with brand partnerships and influencers preferred

  • Previous experience working on Capitol Hill, in political campaigns, or at advocacy organizations preferred

The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $110,000 annually, with the exact salary depending on experience. Competitive benefits include employer-funded health, dental, and vision insurance; flexible spending accounts; pre-tax parking and transit accounts; 403(B) plan with employer match; Employer-paid basic life and AD&D coverage; reimbursement for cell phone use; Headspace subscription; 16 weeks paid parental leave; unlimited PTO plus paid week closure at the end of the calendar year; and eleven paid federal holidays.
