Job description

 

The Intrepid Museum is currently seeking a Director – Public Relations. This position will report directly to the VP of Communications. The Director of Public Relations is responsible for media operations at Museum ceremonies and events, managing media and production shoots, reactive and proactive media relations, driving positive publicity for the organization’s signature festivals, coordinating with the Museum’s PR agency and serving as a primary brand steward. The position will be a key contributor to overall department strategy. The Director will also develop, review, edit and execute content across multiple platforms including the Museum’s website, advertising, printed materials and internal newsletters. The position will coordinate activities with internal departments to support their respective initiatives, ensuring consistency in voice and adherence to brand guidelines and Intrepid Museum style guide. 


Salary Range - $90,000 - $95,000


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Writing

  • Media materials such as press releases, advisories, listings, one-pagers, etc.
  • Talking points/messaging
  • Social copy
  • Website content
  • Video scripts

Editing

  • Grant proposals
  • Written materials across all departments
  • Newsletters and eblasts
  • Exhibit copy
  • Collateral and advertising

Management

  • PR Agency
    • Day to day operations and coordination
  • Senior Space Adviser
    • Coordinate media ops and scheduling
    • Liaise with internal departments regarding needs and activities


Social Media

  • Department liaison with TikTok agency regarding strategy and scripts
  • Review of social content calendar


Media Relations

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications plans for new exhibits, programs
  • Provide message and media training to spokespersons
  • Field and vet media requests
  • Drive media attendance for and manage media on site for festivals, ceremonies, programs and special events
  • Proactively pitch the Museum’s programs and people
  • Maintain a pulse on media trends and tools


Paid shoots

  • Pre-shoot coordination (negotiations, contracts, approvals and coordination with internal departments) and on-site staffing


Strategic Relationships

  • Develop and further relationships with: 
    • Media
    • Military PAOs
    • PR departments for partner events, external events, VIP or Gala honoree teams, etc


Internal Committees (participate in and contribute to)

  • Programming committee
  • Website committee


Museum Brand Stewardship

  • Ensure consistency of tone and adherence to brand guidelines, messaging and Intrepid style guide across all Museum content and distribution channels


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience. Expertise in media operations. Hands-on experience managing media and production shoots. Must be a strong writer and editor with knowledge of Chicago Manuel Style. Experience managing a junior staff member. Experience working across multiple teams and departments. Excellent communication, presentation, and organization skills. Not-for-profit or cultural institution experience a plus. Passion for Museum’s history and mission a plus. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
