A Prep Academy is an educational institution that provides students with rigorous academic preparation, often with a focus on preparing them for higher education such as college or university. These academies typically offer advanced coursework, specialized programs, and extracurricular activities designed to enhance students' academic skills and personal development. Prep Academies may also offer guidance on college admissions, standardized test preparation, and career planning. They can be private or public and may cater to various grade levels depending on their mission. The goal is to give students a competitive edge and support their academic and personal growth.

What are the typical responsibilities and daily routines for educators at a prep academy?

Educators at a prep academy typically balance classroom instruction, lesson planning, and individualized student support throughout their day. In addition to teaching core subjects, they often supervise small group activities, provide feedback on assignments, and communicate regularly with parents about student progress. Job description

Position Overview

Prep Academy Tutors of Northern Virginia is looking for exceptional educators who believe that the right instruction, delivered in the right environment, can make a lasting difference in a student's academic journey.

We are seeking experienced, certified teachers and highly qualified educators to provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring to students in grades K-12 throughout the Northern Virginia area. Our tutors work directly with students in their homes, creating focused learning environments where students can ask questions, build skills, strengthen confidence, and make meaningful academic progress.

This role is especially well suited for current or former classroom teachers who enjoy the individualized nature of tutoring and want the opportunity to work closely with students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

About Prep Academy Tutors

Prep Academy Tutors provides premium, individualized tutoring designed around the unique needs of each student and family. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, we meet students where they are and develop instruction around their academic goals, learning style, strengths, and areas for growth.

Our Virginia team is committed to delivering high-quality, relationship-based educational support in the comfort and convenience of students' homes. We believe strong tutoring is about more than completing assignments-it is about helping students become more capable, confident, and independent learners.

What You'll Do

As an Academic Tutor, you will:

  • Deliver engaging, one-on-one instruction to K-12 students in the student's home
  • Provide support in areas such as Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and other academic subjects within your expertise
  • Adapt lessons and instructional strategies to each student's individual learning needs
  • Reinforce classroom instruction, strengthen foundational skills, and help students master challenging concepts
  • Assist with homework, organization, study strategies, and preparation for assessments and standardized tests
  • Identify areas of academic difficulty and develop targeted strategies for improvement
  • Establish positive, professional relationships with students and their families
  • Monitor student progress and communicate meaningful observations and updates
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and develop greater academic confidence
  • Maintain a professional, supportive, and productive in-home learning environment
  • Travel to students' homes throughout the Northern Virginia area
What We're Looking For

We are looking for educators who bring both strong academic knowledge and genuine teaching experience to every student interaction.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher
  • A valid Virginia teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential
  • Demonstrated classroom teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of at least one core academic subject
  • Experience working with students in grades K-12
  • The ability to adapt instruction for different learning styles, abilities, and academic levels
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, professionalism, reliability, and a student-centered approach
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to student homes
  • Authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

  • Current or recent experience as a certified classroom teacher
  • Experience teaching in a public, private, or charter school
  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic needs
  • Experience with standardized test preparation
  • Experience teaching advanced, honors, AP, or college-preparatory coursework
  • A master's degree or higher
  • Experience providing private tutoring or individualized academic instruction
Why Tutor With Prep Academy Tutors?

Tutoring gives great educators the opportunity to make a highly individualized impact.

Instead of managing an entire classroom, you can focus your expertise and attention on one student at a time. You will have the opportunity to understand how a student learns, identify what is holding them back, and adjust your instruction accordingly.

We offer:

  • Competitive hourly compensation
  • Flexible scheduling based on your availability and student demand
  • One-on-one teaching in students' homes
  • The opportunity to use your classroom expertise in a more personalized setting
  • Professional support from the Prep Academy Tutors team
  • The opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students and families
  • The ability to make a measurable difference in students' academic development
Schedule

Tutors have the flexibility to build a schedule around their existing professional and personal commitments. Student assignments and tutoring hours are based on family needs, tutor availability, subject expertise, and geographic location.

Afternoon, evening, and weekend availability may be particularly valuable.

  • Have current or recent experience as a certified classroom teacher
  • Have at least two years of classroom teaching experience in a public, private, or charter school
  • Have experience as a lecturer or course instructor at an accredited U.S. college or university
