How much do precision engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for precision engineer in Virginia is $94,974.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,300.00 and $115,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Who is a precision engineer?

A precision engineer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining highly accurate and precise mechanical or electronic components and systems. They often work with advanced measurement tools, such as coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and require strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of manufacturing processes to ensure components meet strict specifications.

What are some common challenges faced by precision engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Precision Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining extremely tight tolerances, ensuring consistent quality in production, and troubleshooting complex equipment. These challenges can be addressed by leveraging advanced measurement tools, adhering to strict quality control protocols, and collaborating closely with other engineers and technicians. Ongoing training and staying updated on the latest manufacturing technologies are also essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Precision Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectPrecision EngineerMechanical Engineer
CertificationsTypically requires engineering degrees, often with specialized training in precision manufacturingRequires a mechanical engineering degree; certifications like PE or Chartered Engineer are common
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, laboratories, or quality control settings focused on high-precision componentsDesign offices, manufacturing facilities, or R&D labs working on mechanical systems
Industry UsagePrecision engineering, aerospace, automotive, medical devicesAutomotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, consumer products

While both roles require engineering knowledge, Precision Engineers focus on high-accuracy manufacturing and quality control of components, whereas Mechanical Engineers are involved in designing, analyzing, and developing mechanical systems. The roles often overlap in manufacturing settings but differ in specialization and scope.

What does a precision engineer do?

A Precision Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining high-accuracy components, systems, and instruments. Their work often involves working with tolerances at the micron or even nanometer level in industries such as aerospace, electronics, medical devices, and manufacturing. Precision Engineers use advanced tools, CAD software, and measurement systems to ensure that each product meets strict quality and performance standards. They play a key role in innovation and quality control, ensuring that complex parts fit and function perfectly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a precision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Precision Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, mathematics, and materials science, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise with CAD software, CNC machinery, and metrology tools, along with certifications like Six Sigma or GD&T, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure the development and production of high-precision components that meet stringent industry standards.

Mechanical Engineer - Robotics

HDT Global

Fredericksburg, VA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 26 days ago

Job description

Some jobs aren't just tough - they're brutal. Too toxic. Too remote. Too dangerous for humans to handle. That's where we come in.
At HDT, we build robotic arms and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) with military-grade strength and precision engineering, built for the extremes and adaptable to any challenge. Behind the toughest hardware is a team energized by complex problems. Bring us a challenge, and we'll engineer the solution.
That's the mindset. That's the mission. That's Built for Brutal.
The Mechanical Engineer - Robotics will participate in all aspects of design and engineering including requirements analysis, concept generation, mechanical design, implementation, testing, and documentation. The candidate will work on multiple projects of moderate size or on portions of major projects.
The successful candidate will have experience with machine design, sensors, transmissions, electric motors, bearings, kinematic linkages, material selection, structural analysis, as well as hands-on debugging. The ME- Robotics will have the ability to translate objectives to results and deliverables, while working in a highly-collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Strong robotics fundamentals (kinematics, dynamics, statics, sensing, etc.)
  • Knowledge of 3D mechanical CAD design (Solidworks preferred)
  • Drafting of production drawings for machined parts, fabrications and weldments, COTS parts, and assemblies
  • Static and dynamic structural analysis using a variety of tools including both hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Understands materials needed to optimize strength, weight, cost, and performance
  • Understands machining and manufacturing processes to optimize cost without sacrificing performance
  • Ability to conceptualize and implement the design of complex mechanisms
  • Performs complex design and research tasks; develops mechanical products and systems such as robots, actuators, instruments, sensors, and overall mechatronic systems
  • Designs a complete project, system, component, or process and preparing complete project documents
  • Designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interprets data, formulates and solves problems
  • Ability and desire to learn new concepts and skills quickly
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards.
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned.
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization.

EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :
  • Experience with robotics/mechatronics
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA). SolidWorks COSMOS or equivalent is sufficient.
  • Experience with sizing actuators i.e. brushless electric motors, including the design of custom motors, and transmissions
  • Experience with strain gages and load cells described
  • Experience with other sensors such as hall-effect, angular position, and temperature sensors
  • Possesses strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in standard business software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office). Must possess excellent skills with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Must be able to read, speak and understand English
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and in a team environment

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering required, MS preferred
  • 3+ years work experience (Government contractor experience preferred)

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:
  • Work is accomplished in a typical office environment with adequate environmental (heating/cooling) control. The noise level in the work environment is moderate due to noises associated with computer equipment and environmental control systems.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets
  • Access to operations and manufacturing areas may involve exposure to loud noises, dust, fumes, oils, and fluctuations in temperature
