What is pre physical therapy?

Pre-physical therapy is an undergraduate program for students who plan to pursue a career in physical therapy (PT). This is usually not a major; students on the pre-physical therapy track complete a series of courses as a concentration within another major, such as biology, health science, or physical education. Coursework includes physiology, anatomy, biology, chemistry, and statistics. The goal of a pre-physical therapy program is to prepare you to enter a doctoral program in physical therapy, which takes two to three additional years. Some universities offer six-year combined undergraduate-graduate programs that lead to a master's degree (MPT) or doctorate (DPT) in physical therapy.

What are pre physical therapy programs?

Pre physical therapy programs are undergraduate courses of study designed to prepare students for entry into a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. These programs typically include foundational coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy, and physiology, as well as other general education subjects. Students often gain experience through volunteer or observation hours in clinical settings, which are required by most physical therapy schools. Completing a pre physical therapy program helps ensure that students meet the prerequisites and are well-prepared for the rigors of graduate-level physical therapy education.

What types of clinical experiences or shadowing opportunities are typically available to those in pre physical therapy roles?

Pre-physical therapy students often seek out clinical observation hours or shadowing experiences in a variety of healthcare settings, such as outpatient clinics, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. These opportunities allow you to observe licensed physical therapists, interact with patients, and gain firsthand insight into the daily responsibilities and challenges of the profession. Gaining diverse clinical experience not only strengthens your graduate school application but also helps you determine which areas of physical therapy interest you most. Many programs require a minimum number of observation hours, so proactively seeking these roles early is beneficial.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pre physical therapy student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pre-Physical Therapy student, you need a solid grounding in science courses such as biology, anatomy, and physiology, along with a bachelor's degree or prerequisite coursework. Familiarity with medical terminology, patient documentation systems, and observation or volunteer experience in clinical settings is highly beneficial. Strong interpersonal skills, time management, and a genuine passion for helping others make candidates stand out. These skills and experiences are crucial for successful admission to physical therapy programs and for building a foundation for future clinical practice.

What jobs can you do with a pre-physical therapy degree?

A pre-physical therapy degree prepares individuals for roles such as physical therapy assistant, rehabilitation aide, or fitness trainer, often requiring additional certification or education. These positions involve assisting patients with exercises, supporting therapy sessions, and promoting physical health in clinical or fitness settings.
