What is a pre law internship?

Pre law internships are work experiences designed for undergraduate students who are considering a career in law. These internships offer opportunities to work in law firms, government agencies, non-profits, or corporate legal departments, providing exposure to legal research, case preparation, and the daily responsibilities of legal professionals. They help students gain practical skills, build professional networks, and clarify their interest in pursuing law school. Completing a pre law internship can also strengthen a law school application by demonstrating commitment and relevant experience.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a pre law internship?

As a pre-law intern, you can expect to assist with legal research, draft memos, organize case files, and observe client meetings or court proceedings. Interns often support attorneys and paralegals with administrative tasks and participate in team meetings to gain exposure to various legal processes. While your specific duties may vary depending on the organization, most pre-law internships are structured to provide hands-on experience and mentorship, offering valuable insight into the daily work environment of legal professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a pre law internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Pre Law Internship, you need strong research, analytical, and writing skills, often supported by coursework in political science, history, or related fields. Familiarity with legal databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in Microsoft Office are commonly expected. Attention to detail, professionalism, and effective communication help interns stand out when interacting with legal teams and clients. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting attorneys, producing accurate work, and gaining valuable exposure to the legal profession.
