What is a pre engineering?

A Pre-Engineering job involves preparing designs, performing technical calculations, and assisting engineers in planning projects. It typically includes tasks such as drafting blueprints, conducting research, and ensuring specifications meet industry standards. Pre-engineering roles are common in fields like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, serving as a foundation for more advanced engineering work. These positions provide hands-on experience, helping individuals transition into full-fledged engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in pre engineering, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Pre Engineering role, you need a strong grasp of mathematics, physics, and foundational engineering concepts, often supported by enrollment in or completion of relevant pre-engineering academic programs. Familiarity with CAD software, basic laboratory equipment, and introductory engineering design tools is highly beneficial. Effective teamwork, communication, and an eagerness to learn are valuable soft skills for excelling in collaborative and project-based environments. These abilities provide the groundwork needed for success in further engineering studies and early-career technical positions.

What advancement opportunities are available for someone in pre engineering?

A Pre Engineering position often serves as a stepping stone, offering valuable exposure to real-world engineering practices and foundational skills that can be built upon through further education or on-the-job training. Many Pre Engineering professionals go on to pursue full engineering degrees or apprenticeships that open doors to roles such as Engineering Technician, Design Engineer, or Project Coordinator. The experience gained in this role provides a strong platform for growth, allowing you to specialize in fields like civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering as your interests and skills evolve. Additionally, the collaborative projects and mentoring often available in such positions align well with future leadership and technical opportunities.

What can I do with a pre-engineering degree?

A pre-engineering degree prepares students for further study in engineering fields or related technical roles. Graduates can pursue bachelor’s degrees in engineering, work as technicians, or enter apprenticeships in areas like manufacturing, construction, or design, often utilizing skills in math, science, and problem-solving.

What fields are there in pre engineering?

Pre-engineering typically includes foundational coursework in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and basic engineering principles. It prepares students for specialized engineering disciplines such as mechanical, civil, electrical, computer, and chemical engineering, often involving laboratory work and technical skills development.

This role owns the architectural integrity of solutions across teams, removes engineering blockers, and ensures delivery meets quality and timeline commitments. The Manager is equally responsible for growing a high-performing team and maintaining the trust of clients and internal stakeholders through transparent, reliable execution.
What You'll Do:
Technical Execution & Oversight

  • Remove engineering blockers and facilitate cross-functional technical discussions to keep delivery on track.
  • Partner with the delivery team to ensure on-time, on-scope delivery across all active projects.
  • Lead or actively participate in cross-pod technical guilds (e.g., Frontend, AI/ML, DevOps).
People Leadership & Development
  • Run regular 1:1s with direct reports focused on career growth, performance, and wellbeing.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback and support individual development plans.
  • Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe team environment where engineers can do their best work.
Responsible AI & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure models and systems are explainable, fair, and auditable throughout the solution lifecycle.
  • Uphold and champion AltaML's Responsible AI (RAI) guidelines and development best practices across all teams.
  • Manage end-to-end solution quality in partnership with pod leads, from design through deployment.
Stakeholder & Client Coordination
  • Communicate team progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Maintain a strong comms loop with the delivery team to keep project requirements aligned.
  • Support pre-sales and business development by providing low-level solution architecture, demos, and technical Q&A on calls.
Resource Planning & Hiring
  • Conduct hiring interviews and contribute to candidate assessment for engineering roles.
  • Assist with quarterly resource allocation planning across pods.
What You Bring:
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a technical lead or management role.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive architectural decisions and maintain engineering quality in a fast-paced delivery environment.

  • Experience managing and growing engineers across different levels.

  • Comfortable engaging directly with clients and stakeholders-you can translate technical complexity into clear, confident communication.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML solutions and modern MLOps or software delivery practices.

  • A track record of championing responsible, ethical AI and inclusive team culture.
