How much do power plant jobs pay per hour?
What is a power plant?
A Power Plant job involves operating, maintaining, and overseeing equipment that generates electricity. Workers in this field ensure the plant runs efficiently, conduct routine inspections, and troubleshoot issues to prevent downtime. Positions can vary from plant operators and technicians to engineers and maintenance personnel. These roles require technical knowledge, adherence to safety protocols, and sometimes specialized certifications or training.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a power plant operator?
Power Plant Operators are responsible for monitoring and controlling equipment to generate and distribute electric power, performing routine inspections, and responding to alarms or operational anomalies. They carefully log operational data, conduct safety checks, and coordinate with maintenance teams to address equipment issues. Operators may also assist with periodic testing, equipment startups or shutdowns, and adhere strictly to regulatory and safety protocols. This hands-on, technical role involves both independent tasks and regular collaboration with engineers and technicians to maintain optimal plant performance.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the power plant position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Power Plant Operator, you need a solid understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, often supported by a relevant technical degree or vocational training. Familiarity with distributed control systems (DCS), SCADA software, and industry certifications such as NERC or EPA qualifications are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help operators excel in dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environments. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable power generation at all times.

Minnesota River Station, located in Chaska, Minnesota, is a 49 MW natural gas-fired peaking facility powered by a Siemens SGT-800 gas turbine. Together, the facilities provide reliable and flexible power generation to the region.
Opportunity Summary
The Power Plant Engineer supports engineering, performance, and reliability across Faribault Energy Park and Minnesota River Station (MRS). This role will play a key part in Faribault’s upcoming GE 7FA.03-to-7FA.05 turbine upgrade while serving as the primary engineering point of contact for MRS, supporting O&M planning, turbine reliability, condition-based maintenance, and plant performance. The Power Plant Engineer also supports NERC compliance, technical improvements, and continuous improvement across both facilities while gaining broad experience that supports future leadership opportunities.
As Power Plant Engineer, you’ll make an impact through the following key responsibilities:

- Develop and support condition-monitoring programs, including vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, instrumentation, and other predictive maintenance technologies.
- Support Operations and Maintenance with equipment troubleshooting, startup/shutdown activities, maintenance planning, and reliability initiatives.
- Maintain plant drawings, SOPs, procedures, and configuration-control documentation to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
- Coordinate with OEMs, vendors, engineering firms, and contractors to resolve technical issues and implement equipment modifications and improvements.
- Support reliability studies and manage capital improvement projects to improve plant availability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Analyze operational and performance data, track operating costs and critical spare parts, and recommend improvements that reduce downtime and optimize plant performance.
- Support safety, environmental, and emissions compliance, including audits, reporting, procedures, and training.
- Perform other engineering and operational assignments as needed to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
NERC Compliance & Reliability
- Administer and maintain the plant’s NERC Internal Control Program (ICP), ensuring applicable procedures, policies, and documentation remain current and compliant.
- Monitor and interpret NERC Reliability Standards and new requirements, coordinating implementation at the plant level.
- Coordinate with NAES NERC and other stakeholders on RSAWs, audits, compliance visits, documentation, and technical responses.
