Poultry Associate information

What is a poultry associate?

Poultry Associates are workers who help care for and manage poultry, such as chickens, turkeys, or ducks, on farms or in production facilities. Their duties typically include feeding birds, collecting eggs, cleaning enclosures, monitoring the health of the flock, and maintaining proper living conditions. They may also assist with vaccinations, record-keeping, and preparing birds for sale or transport. Poultry Associates play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of the birds and the efficiency of poultry operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a poultry associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Poultry Associate, you need a basic understanding of animal care, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with farm equipment, biosecurity protocols, and safety standards is frequently required, and some employers may provide on-the-job training or require certifications in animal handling. Strong work ethic, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the health and productivity of the poultry, maintain a safe working environment, and support efficient farm operations.

What are some common challenges faced by poultry associates, and how can they be managed on the job?

Poultry Associates often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict biosecurity protocols, working in environments with fluctuating temperatures, and handling live animals with care. Managing these challenges typically involves adhering to safety and sanitation guidelines, using personal protective equipment, and communicating effectively with team members to ensure animal welfare and product quality. Employers often provide training on safe handling techniques and procedures to help associates succeed and stay safe on the job.

Job description

About Neion Bio
Neion Bio is harnessing nature's best molecular factory, the chicken egg, to make medicine affordable, accessible, and resilient. We turn farms into medicine factories using cutting edge genetic engineering and stem cell technology. These "living bioreactors" are fully autonomous 3D biomolecular printers that operate on existing industrial-scale infrastructure. Our platform can rapidly and scalably produce almost any protein, provide national resilience to drug shortages and de-risk complex supply chains, and ultimately take advantage of novel biological environments to solve unmet medical needs. Biomanufacturing, reinvented. Medicine, democratized.
Role Summary
We are seeking an adaptable and organized caretaker/technician/associate who is motivated by the ethical care of animals and will contribute to the growth of Neion's research program. This role involves hands-on care and handling of chickens and quail throughout their lifecycle, with a focus on reproductive biology in poultry, including AI, hatching and breeding, as well as additional aspects of avian veterinary care for chickens and quail.
Key Responsibilities
  • Aviculture: Must be comfortable safely handling chickens in a research setting. Requires working with small flocks at all stages of development from egg collection, incubation and the successful hatching and growth of chicks and chickens
  • Avian Breeding (Poultry): Artificial insemination, natural cover breeding, cryopreservation of semen, egg collection, incubation, hatching, sexing, and genotyping.
  • Veterinary Care: Carry out procedures, for example: safely restrain and perform venipuncture, collect and process samples, and ensure lab delivery, and provide preventative and interventional care.
  • Biosecurity: Must be comfortable showering into the facility, and working in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and observing strict standard operating protocols (SOPs) to protect avian health
  • Culture of Care: Contribute to ensuring the health and environmental, nutritional and social enrichment of our flocks
  • Record Keeping: Maintain timely and accurate animal records
  • Regulatory Compliance: Help to ensure that research areas and records meet and exceed IACUC inspection compliance

Why Neion Bio?
We are on a mission to reimagine the way in which complex biological molecules are produced to transform human health. At Neion Bio you will play a pivotal role in an early-stage, fast-growing company, working alongside leading scientists and entrepreneurs. You will have the opportunity to participate in the enormous potential upside while having a huge impact on the world.
This is a rare opportunity to work at the center of a highly ambitious biotechnology company and help build the operating foundation for a new category of medicine manufacturing.
Requirements
  • 4+ years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, farm or zoological setting is critical, including direct hands-on avian experience
  • Prior experience doing artificial insemination and cryopreservation of semen, as well incubating and hatching eggs and raising chickens
  • Undergraduate or an associate degree in biological sciences or related fields, or equivalent industry experience
  • Extreme attention to detail is critical, as well as strict compliance with SOPs and are followed and documented
  • Ability to operate with quiet confidence and competence, individually and as part of a team to promote a culture of care

Benefits
Compensation: base salary is expected to be $60K-$80K depending on experience, with additional bonus compensation, equity compensation, and benefits including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 401(k), and relocation support.
