What is a postdoctoral researcher?
What are some common challenges postdoctoral researchers face when transitioning to independent research roles?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral researcher, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Postdoctoral vs Research Scientist?
| Aspect | Postdoctoral | Research Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) often required | Master's or Ph.D., depending on the field |
| Work Environment | Academic labs, universities, research institutions | Industry labs, corporate R&D, government agencies |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Primarily academia and research institutions | Primarily industry and corporate sectors |
| Common Search & Comparison | Yes | Yes |
Postdoctoral researchers typically hold a Ph.D. and work in academic or research institutions to gain specialized experience. Research Scientists often have similar credentials but are employed in industry or corporate R&D settings. While both roles involve research, Postdoctoral positions are usually temporary and focused on academic advancement, whereas Research Scientists are often permanent staff working on applied projects in industry.

Job Title Postdoctoral Research Associate
Location Los Alamos, NM, US
Organization Name M-6/Explosive Applications & Special Projects Group
Minimum Salary
Maximum Salary
What You Will Do
M-6 is seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team. The Explosive Applications and Special Projects Group (M-6) within the Dynamic Experiments (M) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory conducts research to study the initiation and performance of high explosives (HE) through mechanical, thermal, and electromagnetic mechanisms. Our areas of expertise include non-shock initiation of HE, HE-driven pulsed-power, special energetic materials, and special security projects in service to the Laboratory, nation, and other national security areas. We also develop and perfect the use of state-of-the-art diagnostics tools to collect and analyze data on various high-rate events. Such tools include a variety of precision sensors that measure very short-duration, high-speed changes in temperature, pressure, and position, e.g., high-speed photography, PDV, and radiography . This complex work requires a multitude of advanced research and development activities, such as:
- Handling of high explosives.
- Designing explosive and inert experiments, assemblies, and experimental apparatus.
- Translating experimental concepts and requirements into fieldable mechanical designs.
- Identifying appropriate materials, processes, and manufacturers to meet project specifications.
- Quoting, ordering, tracking and receiving components.
- Executing experiments.
- Collecting and analyzing experimental data.
- Reporting and presenting experimental results.
The Postdoctoral (Postdoc) Program offers the opportunity for appointees to perform research in a scientifically rich research and development environment; present and publish research; and contribute to the research efforts at the Laboratory, the advancement of knowledge in the areas of basic and applied research, and the strengthening of our national scientific and technical capabilities.
