What is a postdoctoral virology?

A Postdoctoral Virology job is a research-focused position for individuals who have recently earned a Ph.D. in virology or a related field. It involves conducting independent and collaborative research on viruses, their structure, replication, and interaction with host organisms. Postdocs work in academic institutions, government agencies, or private industry, contributing to scientific discoveries, publishing findings, and developing new antiviral strategies. The position helps researchers gain advanced skills and experience to transition into permanent roles in academia or industry.

What are the typical responsibilities and daily activities of a postdoctoral virology?

Postdoctoral Virology researchers typically design and conduct experiments to investigate virus behavior, replication, and interactions with host cells. Daily tasks often include performing laboratory assays, analyzing data, reviewing scientific literature, and writing research manuscripts. Collaboration is common, as you'll work closely with principal investigators, lab technicians, and interdisciplinary teams. You may also mentor graduate or undergraduate students and present findings at lab meetings or scientific conferences. This role offers a dynamic environment where innovation and attention to detail are highly valued.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the postdoctoral virology position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Virology researcher, you need an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in virology, microbiology, or a related field, strong laboratory skills, and a proven track record of scientific research. Familiarity with molecular biology techniques, cell culture, data analysis software, and relevant biosafety certifications is essential. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams are key soft skills. These qualifications enable high-quality research, safe laboratory practices, and successful collaboration in a dynamic scientific environment.

Job description

Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Binhua (Julie) Ling to study HIV persistence and cure strategies using translational preclinical models and advanced immunological and virological approaches. Research focuses on viral reservoirs, mechanisms of viral rebound, and development of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at achieving durable viral remission. Additional interests include HIV-associated comorbidities, substance use disorders, aging and microbiome interactions.

The postdoctoral scientist will work closely with Dr. Ling, members of the research team, and national and international investigators in a highly collaborative research environment. The position provides opportunities to develop independent research skills and gain training in advanced virological, immunological, and translational research approaches within the outstanding multidisciplinary research environment at Texas Biomedical Research Institute.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M. degree in virology, immunology, molecular biology, or a related biomedical field. Candidates should have hands-on research experience in virology, molecular biology, and/or immunology. Experience with translational HIV animal models is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with molecular virology techniques, including RT-PCR, droplet digital PCR, sequencing/phylogenetic analysis, scRNA-seq, and multi-omics approaches.
  • Proficiency in cell culture, tissue and blood cell isolation, flow cytometry, immunostaining, and data analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including manuscript preparation and scientific presentations.
  • Familiarity with scientific analysis software such as GraphPad Prism, FlowJo, IPA, and related bioinformatics or analytical tools.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment, with strong organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae (CV), a brief statement outlining future research interests and scientific goals, and contact information for at least three professional references as part of the application.
