What is a postdoctoral position in ecological modeling?

A postdoctoral position in ecological modeling is a temporary research role, typically held after earning a PhD, focused on using mathematical, statistical, or computational models to study ecological systems. Postdocs in this field often work on projects related to ecosystem dynamics, species interactions, conservation strategies, or climate change impacts. These roles involve designing models, analyzing data, publishing research, and sometimes mentoring students. The goal is to advance scientific knowledge and develop professional skills for future independent research or academic positions.

What are some typical collaborative opportunities for postdoctoral researchers in ecological modeling?

Postdoctoral researchers in ecological modeling often work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including ecologists, data scientists, and climate researchers. Collaboration may involve co-developing models, sharing datasets, and jointly publishing research findings. Many institutions encourage postdocs to participate in grant writing, workshops, and conferences, which can further expand professional networks and lead to new collaborative projects. This collaborative environment helps postdocs develop diverse skill sets and build a strong foundation for future independent research or academic positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral researcher in ecological modeling?

To excel as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Ecological Modeling, you need a Ph.D. in ecology, environmental science, or a related field, with strong quantitative and analytical skills. Experience with statistical modeling software (such as R or Python), GIS applications, and ecological simulation tools is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative teamwork are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing robust ecological models, interpreting complex data, and effectively sharing findings with scientific and stakeholder communities.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Position Ecological Modeling vs Postdoctoral Position Conservation Biology?

AspectPostdoctoral Position Ecological ModelingPostdoctoral Position Conservation Biology
Required CredentialsPh.D. in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field; strong quantitative skillsPh.D. in Ecology, Conservation Biology, or related field; focus on fieldwork and policy
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, computational settings, data analysisField sites, research institutions, policy agencies
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutes, government agencies

Postdoctoral Position Ecological Modeling focuses on developing and applying computational models to understand ecological systems, while Postdoctoral Position Conservation Biology emphasizes field research and policy work to protect species and habitats. Both roles require a Ph.D. and are common in academic and research settings, but differ in their primary methods and focus areas.

As one of the world's largest publicly traded energy and chemical companies, we are powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by the pride in what we do and what we stand for. The success of our Upstream, Product Solutions and Low Carbon Solutions businesses is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies. We invite you to bring your ideas to ExxonMobil to help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society's evolving needs. Learn more about our What and our Why (https://corporate.exxonmobil.com/About-us/Who-we-are) and how we can work together (https://corporate.exxonmobil.com/Sustainability/Sustainability-Report/Social/Investing-in-people). Summary We are seeking a senior Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our interdisciplinary research team at ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, Inc. (EMBSI). The Associate will support and lead a diverse portfolio of applied research projects aimed at evaluating the role of water management in enhancing ecosystem resilience, hydrologic function, and biodiversity across a range of ecosystems. Serving as a cross-disciplinary scientific integrator, the candidate will provide leadership in study design, QA/QC oversight, and technical coordination across hydrologic modeling, hydrogeologic systems, ecological monitoring, and geospatial analytics. This role emphasizes ensuring scientific defensibility, data integrity, and alignment across complex datasets and modeling systems, while synthesizing outputs to inform adaptive management and decisionโ€making. In addition to coordinating ongoing efforts, the Associate will actively generate novel research directions by translating integrated data insights into new hypotheses, study designs, and strategic initiatives. The position requires close collaboration with a broad team of industry, academic scientists, and 3rd party collaborators to coโ€develop approaches, harmonize methodologies, and integrate expertise across disciplines. Through these efforts, the candidate will contribute to highโ€impact research, proposal development, and partnerships with academic and industry collaborators, advancing our understanding of the water, soil, plant, animal nexus, including surfaceโ€groundwater interactions. In addition, postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to publish and present their work in peerโ€reviewed journals and conferences. This is supported through a standard internal review process designed to protect intellectual property and confidential business information while enabling timely dissemination of scientific results. This opportunity is for a postdoctoral position expected to last one to three years, subject to annual review and renewal. About you Skills and Qualifications Ph.D. in: Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Ecohydrology, Environmental Science, Rangeland Ecology, or related field Demonstrated experience with study design and experimental frameworks, Data QA/QC and management Experience with processโ€based hydrologic and/or hydrogeologic models (e.g., SWAT+, APEX, MODFlOW) Strong quantitative and statistical skills (R, Python, or equivalent) Expertise in GIS and spatial analysis (ArcGIS, QGIS, GEE) Track record of peerโ€reviewed publications Strong written and verbal communication, coordination, and collaboration skills Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary team Preferred Qualifications / Experience Experience overseeing multi-disciplinary field programs Background in water quality, salinity, nutrient transport systems, or groundwater flow systems Experience with remote sensing integration (LiDAR, UAV, satellite) Experience with surfaceโ€groundwater interaction studies and aquifer characterization Familiarity with regulatory or applied monitoring frameworks Experience working with industryโ€sponsored or applied research programs Strong ability to bridge science, operations, and decisionโ€making What you will do Study Design & Scientific Oversight Provide leadership in study design refinement, ensuring alignment between: Hydrologic and/or hydrogeologic modeling, field monitoring networks, ecological response metrics Develop and standardize sampling frameworks and experimental design across treatment and control areas Ensure consistency between field data collection, modeling assumptions, and reporting outputs Support development of monitoring plans and adaptive management frameworks QA/QC & Data Governance Ensure implementation of QA/QC protocols across all project datasets, including: Hydrology, hydrogeology, vegetation, wildlife Establish data validation workflows, metadata standar #J-18808-Ljbffr
