Job description

About the Job

Applicants are invited to apply for a Researcher 5 position in the Ebner Laboratory. The Ebner lab investigates how the cerebellum and cerebral cortex contribute to behaviors that range from simple motor tasks to more complex tasks, such as spatial navigation and cognitive flexibility. During these behaviors, we use optical imaging tools to record neural activity as well as advanced electrophysiology recordings. The analysis of the behavioral and neural data uses a spectrum of state-of-the art analyses and statistical approaches. Researchers will have the opportunity to present and publish the outcome of their work, participate in grant writing, as well as take a leadership role within the lab.
75%  Design, Plan, and Implement Complex Neuro-behavioral Experiments
Support ongoing projects in the laboratory by conducting investigations into the role of the cerebellum in reinforcement learning and cognitive flexibility.
Use a combination of optical imaging, optogenetics in these projects.
Lead the development of high-density electrophysiology recordings to the project.
Analyze and interpret the experimental results using advanced computational and statistical approaches.
Present the results at lab meetings and national/international scientific meetings.
Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with grant writing.
Remain current on technological and scientific developments in the field and their potential uses in the lab.
Spur new research directions and new projects as the project evolves.
25%  Support for Lab Operations
Help with overseeing other research staff and students working on the individuals main projects, including training in experimental techniques and data processing.
Advise other researchers and projects in the laboratory by helping troubleshoot technical or analysis problems, and in reviewing their manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications.
Assist in writing grants and grant reports.
Guide researchers outside of the lab interested in learning and/or using our techniques or analyses.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Advanced degree (PhD) in the neurosciences or closely related field(s) with at least two years of postdoctoral training.
Experience carrying out complex, long-term neuroscience-related research projects.
Experience training mice in behavioral paradigms and recording neural activity during behaviors.
Demonstrated publication record in the neurosciences.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with optical imaging of neural activity using calcium imaging and/or high-density electrophysiology in behaving mice.
Experience with reinforcement learning behaviors and models, including designing experimental behavior paradigms.
Experience with optogenetic techniques to manipulate neurons in behaving mice.
Effective oral skills and some experience writing grants.
The ability to carry out experiments independently, including troubleshooting, optimization and reporting results.
