What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Reinforcement Learning, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Reinforcement Learning, you need a PhD in computer science or a related field, with deep expertise in machine learning, statistics, and algorithm development. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow or PyTorch), and familiarity with reinforcement learning libraries are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, collaboration, and scientific communication skills help you excel in research teams and publish impactful work. These competencies are vital to advancing state-of-the-art research, developing novel algorithms, and contributing to the academic and industrial progress in AI.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in reinforcement learning, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in reinforcement learning often face challenges such as balancing independent research projects with collaborative work, staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving literature, and managing the pressure to publish in top conferences. Effective time management, regular engagement with the research community through seminars and workshops, and seeking mentorship from senior colleagues can help address these challenges. Additionally, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams can offer fresh perspectives and support, making it easier to navigate complex research problems.

What is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Reinforcement Learning?

A Postdoctoral Researcher in Reinforcement Learning is an individual who has completed a PhD and conducts advanced research in the field of reinforcement learning, a branch of artificial intelligence focused on how agents take actions in environments to maximize rewards. These researchers often work in academic, industrial, or governmental research settings, collaborating on projects that advance the theoretical foundations or practical applications of reinforcement learning. Their responsibilities may include designing experiments, developing algorithms, publishing papers, and mentoring graduate students.

Job description

Department
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Florida A&M University - Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) joint College of Engineering invites applications for a Post Doctoral Research Scholar.
Responsibilities
The postdoc will primarily focus on modeling compound flood events under climate change and sea level rise in coastal watersheds via hydrodynamic models. Given that my team works closely with various institutes (academic, government agencies, national labs etc.), there will be several opportunities for collaboration. The selected candidate will present the findings in peer-reviewed articles and conferences. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to student mentoring and assist in writing research grants.
Qualifications
  • A doctoral degree in engineering (civil, agricultural, water resources or environmental), sciences (hydrology, environmental, geographical or Earth) or any closely related field
  • Understanding of physical processes related to compound floods in coastal watersheds under climate change and sea level rise
  • Strong computer programming (R, MATLAB or Python) as well as analytical and quantitative skills
  • Hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling as well as stochastic, statistical, time series and geospatial analyses
  • Independency, communication, presentation (oral and written), fast learning and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.

Other Information
Dr. Ahmadisharaf's research group currently has multiple research projects funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Florida Department of Environmental Protection and National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) on the broad area of water resources and hydrology.
Helpful
Beginning as early as August 2024. Funding is available for 30 months, contingent upon the postdoc performance, with the possibility of extension beyond depending on funding availability. Benefits (like family health insurance) will be provided in addition to a competitive salary.
Contact Info
Highly motivated applicants should contact Dr. Ebrahim Ahmadisharaf (eahmadisharaf@eng.famu.fsu.edu) with their CV, unofficial transcripts and a brief statement describing how their interests can contribute to the research topics.
